SHILLONG: The Meghalaya ASHA Workers’ Union (MAWU) and the Meghalaya ASHA Facilitators Union (MAFU) sought the intervention of Chief Secretary K.S Kropha on Tuesday for the fulfilment of their demands.
Speaking to reporters after meeting Kropha, Haphilin Pyrtuh said, “We demand a fixed monthly salary for ASHA workers and facilitators.”
She added that the Union is demanding travel allowances because the health workers often go to distant places to implement state and central schemes. “At this present age and time, to be an honorary volunteer is no longer a viable option for us as we too have families to look after. We need to get monthly payment. If possible, our honorarium should be enhanced,” she said. When asked on the assurance given by the chief secretary, Pyrtuh said he assured them that the matter would be considered. She informed that there are 6,000 ASHA workers across the state.
MAWU and MAFU also took out a rally from Jail Road to the Additional Secretariat.
