SHILLONG: The Minister in charge of District Council Affairs, Prestone Tynsong, said on Friday the Centre is in the process of amending the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution so that the number of members in the GHADC can be increased to 40.
The district council currently has 30 members.
“We are hopeful that the Union Cabinet will soon decide on the matter after which it will be taken to Parliament,” he said here.
Earlier, ANVC had proposed that out of the 40 members, 35 should be elected by people and the remaining – comprising two ANVC members, two nokmas (traditional heads) and a woman – would be nominated.
The Agreed Text Settlement of ANVC will also impact the other two existing Autonomous District Councils – the KHADC and the JHADC. Tynsong also pointed out that the government is looking into it.
