SHILLONG: Officers in the traffic department got a lesson on how to deal with the public during an awareness programme in the city on Saturday.
Speaking at the programme on ethics and moral policing for Shillong Traffic personnel, SP (Traffic) NK Syiem said officers should be polite when dealing with people when they come to police stations to lodge complaints or on roads.
The SP urged the officials to maintain discipline and be sincere. “Traffic personnel have a great responsibility in making the image of the Meghalaya Police since they are the ones who are in touch with the public,” he added.
Syiem said though the job of a police officer is challenging, yet they should maintain decency and refer to a woman as ‘Madam or Sister’ and a man as ‘Sir or Brother’. “The public servants” should refrain from using harsh words, it was advised. It is their duty to help people and make them feel safe rather than creating a negative image about police, the SP said.
The programme was initiated by Syiem and Sadar Police Station OC D.K Prasad.
The officers were warned of strict action in case of indiscipline.
Cleanliness was the other topic of discussion at the programme.
