DRI seizes ‘foreign origin’ gold worth Rs 2.45 cr

Chennai, May 16 (UNI) Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) have seized ‘foreign origin’ gold valued at Rs 2.45 crore from two passengers who arrived at the Chennai Central station and arrested them.
Acting on a tip-off, DRI officials intercepted the duo D L Thara and L K Zou, who arrived by the Guwahati-Trivandrum Superfast Express at the Central Railway Station last evening and seized the gold, concealed in two bags. .
A DRI release today said, on being questioned, they admitted carrying the gold, which was later seized by the officials.
It was believed that the foreign origin gold was smuggled through the Indo-Myanmar land border.
The officials seized 8,330 grams of foreign origin gold of 24 Karat purity valued at Rs 2.45 crore.
The two passengers were arrested on charges of smuggling gold under the Customs Act and remanded to judicial custody, the release said. UNI
