SHILLONG: An aspiring candidate for 2018 polls from North Shillong constituency, Tony Marbaniang, has filed an FIR against former minister and BJP leader JA Lyngdoh for allegedly defaming him.
Speaking to media persons after filing the FIR at the Sadar Police Station here on Monday, Marbaniang said the former cabinet minister defamed him by making baseless allegations during a meeting at Oakland community hall on May 14.
He said that Lyngdoh has indirectly accused him of extortion in the meeting.
Marbaniang alleged that Lyngdoh had said that he (Tony Marbaniang) would not contest the election if he is paid to withdraw from the fray.
It may be mentioned that both Marbaniang and Lyngdoh are eyeing the BJP ticket from North Shillong constituency.
Stating that he has proper evidence including video footage of Lyngdoh making the allegations, Marbaniang said that he will soon call for a press conference to present the proof.
“I will fight for justice,” he said while accusing the senior leader of playing dirty politics to gain score ahead of the elections.
Marbaniang also displayed a membership form before media persons showing that he was a BJP member and had joined the party along with many supporters.
