SHILLONG: Tura, the second largest town in the State after the capital Shillong, is witnessing huge traffic snarls.
Speaking on the matter, West Garo Hills SP, Raghavendra Kumar said that the Committee on Road Safety recently decided to implement one-way routes at four locations of the town to reduce the congestion.
He, however, said that the decision in this regard was not implemented immediately as it would create inconvenience for the public and the district deputy commissioner has been asked to give some time to the public to familiarise themselves with the one way system.
“Once the recommendations are implemented, 40-50 per cent of the traffic woes in the town will be taken care of,” he said.
In addition, there are few proposals to setup “embarking and disembarking zones besides parking and no parking zones” to further regulate traffic in the town, Kumar informed.
Meanwhile, the police have also urged people to use public transport to send their wards to schools to substantially reduce traffic congestion.
