Mizoram CM Lal Thanhawla turns 79

Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla turned 79 on Friday but no celebrations were held as he is down with flu and high fever, officials from the chief minister’s office said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished Lal Thanhawla on the occasion. “Wishing the Chief Minister of Mizoram, Lal Thanhawla on his birthday. I pray that he leads a long and healthy life,” Modi tweeted. The chief minister has been bed-ridden for the last two days and is being treated at his official residence, they said, adding that he is out of danger. Lal Thanhawla is five-time chief minister of the state. (PTI)
Four Manipur police commandos injured in IED blast
Imphal: Four Manipur police commandos were injured, two of them critically, in an IED blast triggered by militants in the state’s Chandel district on Friday. The blast occurred at around 12.45 pm on Imphal-Moreh road, some 10 kms from the border town of Moreh, when a police convoy was heading towards Imphal through Kwatha Khunou Lamkhai area in the hill district, police said. Following the blast, police reinforcements have been rushed to the spot, a senior police officer said. The seriously injured personnel were airlifted to Imphal in an IAF chopper for treatment, he said. This is the second attack carried out by militants on security personnel this month. On May 9, two personnel of the Territorial Army (TA) were killed in an IED blast carried out by militants when a TA team were on road opening duty at Lokchao in Tengnoupal district. (PTI)
Four new additional judges in Gauhati High Court
Guwahati: Four new additional judges of the Gauhati High Court were on Friday sworn in. Chief Justice Ajit Singh administered the oath of office to Justice Lanusungkum Jamir and Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak as additional judges for a period of six months. The Chief Justice also administered the oath of office to Justice Hitesh Kumar Sarma and Justice Mir Alfaz Ali as additional judges for a period of two years, an official release said here. (PTI)
ULFA (I) militant killed in Assam
Guwahati: A wanted ULFA(I) militant has been killed in an encounter with security forces in Udalguri district, officials said on Friday. Acting on intelligence inputs, a joint operation was launched by the Army and the police in the district on Thursday where the militant was gunned down in an exchange of fire with the security forces, a defence spokesperson said. Arms and ammunitions were seized from the encounter site, the spokesperson said. The militant, Ramesh Bora, was the deputy of another hardcore ULFA(I) militant Rajan Deka and the self-styled ‘area commander’ of the outfit’s Udalgudi and Darrang districts, he said. (PTI)
