No ransomware threat to city ATMs

SHILLONG: The automated teller machines in the city are “completely safe” and are not threatened by the WannaCry, the global ransomware cyber attack, which has affected around 150 countries, an official of the State Bank of India said.
“Hundred per cent of the ATMs in Shillong and in the North East are working fine and Shillong ATMs are performing the best,” the SBI official told The Shillong Times.
The ATM coverage in Shillong is 97 per cent. The official said SBI regularly updates its anti-virus in all ATMs. The SBI official also urged the public not to panic.
The ransomware is said have affected ATMs which were installed five to seven years ago and are running on Windows XP software. The new ATMs, which run on Windows 10, are said to be safe from the malware.
So far, none of the ATMs in the country have been affected.
