Agartala: The CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury on Sunday said that left parties will extend the support to the Presidential candidates to be put up by the opposition if there is no consensus.
Talking to media Yechury said as custom the government always moves discussion for consensus on the candidature of President but this time the Modi led government did not do it.
“After a detailed discussion over a month we have decided to support opposition candidates because the intention of the government is not clear yet,” Yechury said.
He maintained, “We believe at this point of time office of the President is most important because of the political situation of the country. President is the custodian of the constitution; we want a secular custodian not communal”.
He pointed out during Vajpayee regime, the government sought for consensus when they decided to put A P J Abdul Kalam as presidential candidate and leftist supported it.
But the present situation seems to be difference, as till date there was no move from the ruling party.
Yechury accompanied by his predecessor Prakas Karat came here on Saturday to attend CPI(M) state committee meeting.
“We have had a detail discussion on the upcoming assembly election, as Tripura election is considered to be important for left politics in India now. We are ready to fight democratically at the last extent to secure the victory,” the CPI (M) general secretary attributed.
Criticising BJP, he said BJP wants to make Tripura as stepping stone in northeast but the left front would not allow this.
“BJP declared CPI(M) as it’s ideological enemy and they would fight to dislodge the left regime. They won power in Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Goa by money power and here also BJP will play the same tactics but we are ready to counter them,” he warned.
Yechury said in past three years of Modi’s rule, Industry, Agriculture and employment have suffered badly and Modi cheated the people of the country with false promises.
“Joblessness has emerged as major threat to IT, manufacturing and infrastructure industries in past three years. The rich people became richer and average 12000 farmers committed suicide in past three years. Wheat import bill reduced to less than minimum support price and debt burden increasing heavily,” he claimed.
Yechury said CPI(M) has formulated it’s two-prong poll strategies for Tripura to defeat BJP-RSS like communal forces and party is ready to go for democratic fight. (UNI)
