SHILLONG: The KHNAM on Wednesday questioned the sincerity of satraps in forming a regional alliance and asked them to go back to history before considering the possibility.
KHNAM’s comment was in reference to the proposal of UDP’s district council member H.S Shylla to form a regional alliance against the national parties.
Addressing media persons here on Wednesday, Adelbert Nongrum, KHNAM working president, said, “We have been talking of an alliance but are we serious? We have to look back at the history of regional alliances in the State.”
There is no history of a pre-poll grand alliance of local parties in the State and the post-poll understandings were too feeble to sustain for long.
“There is no introduction as yet. So the conclusion will come later. KHNAM speaks of unity not because elections are near but due to various issues plaguing the minority community,” the KHNAM leader added.
Nongrum pointed out that of the regional entities, UDP is already supporting the North-East Democratic Alliance.
He added that with the coming of the regional alliance, BJP and Congress will not be able to secure a place in the political arena in the State. “It is not about the survival of political parties or politicians but the minority communities in the State,” said Nongrum.

Stating that he has seen the problems faced by the indigenous communities in the State, Bonney, who is a political greenhorn and member of KHNAM, said, “I tried to form a farmers’ organisation but nothing works. So I decided to join politics.”
