TURA: The new traffic rules were meant to ease the traffic congestion in major parts of Tura town but instead ended up adding to the chaos and confusion.
Angry commuters questioned the rationale behind the one-way roads that have already resulted in traffic snarls along several roads, particularly the Tura Bazar to Hawakhana route.
The administration began enforcing its new traffic rules on Wednesday morning by creating one-way traffic along major stretches of the town.
However, the move boomeranged and some of the selected one-way routes led to more problems for commuters.
South Tura MLA John Leslee K. Sangma has issued a strongly-worded letter to deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi terming the new rules as nothing short of “harassment and inconvenience caused to the public by an ill-conceived and unprofessional new traffic arrangement”.
Blaming the administration for not consulting the elected representatives before undertaking such a major change, the MLA has called for an immediate review of the new traffic rules.
West Garo Hills police chief M.G Raghavendra Kumar said the issue is being looked into. “I am holding consultations and we will bring modifications accordingly for public convenience,” said the police chief.
