KHADC summons Sohra Syiem
SHILLONG: The KHADC on Thursday grilled the chief of Hima Sohra, Pa’iem Freeman Sing Syiem, for close to six hours over allegations levelled by four villages.
The KHADC had summoned the Syiem following complaints made against him by Raid Mawshuit,
Kongthong, Mawphu and Majai.
According to the members of Raid Mawshuit, the Raid has not had a full-fledged sordar for five consecutive years now to administer the village as the chief has not convened a dorbar despite being directed by KHADC CEM PN Syiem to do so.
Mawphu village is peeved with the decision of the Syiem to resolve the boundary issue among Mawphu, Laitduh, Umblai and Laitlyndop without consulting the villagers. From Majai, there were several allegations, which included the grant of NOC to outsiders.
Speaking to reporters, Executive member in charge of Elaka, Latiplang Kharkongor, said the Syiem of Hima Sohra gave vague replies to the complaints. Kharkongor gave the Syiem some time to come clear on the matters.
Land delay in Mawlai C&RD block
SHILLONG: Mawlai C&RD Block, which was supposed to be functional from April, is being delayed because of land problem.
Earlier, C&RD Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar had told a delegation from the Mawlai Town Dorbar (MTD) that the C&RD block will be functional by April after finalisation of the land for construction of office. However, officials in the department did not pick up the phone but it was learnt that the problem in locating land has delayed the whole idea.
City resident takes part inedu-cong in Switzerland
SHILLONG: Alvarinea Nongsiej, a Scouts & Guides leader, participated in the second World Education Congress held at Kanderstag, Switzerland, recently. Some of the topics discussed at the meet included youth involvement policy, adults in scouting, Vision 2023, diversity and inclusion, change management, children’s rights, values and young people, education trends, youth and digital – the change of information flow, peace and human rights etc.
Being the only representative from India, she visited Zurich, Kanderstag and Geneva in Switzerland, Paris in France and Milan in Italy. She also gained a lot of exposure especially on an international platform as this. In her words, “On a personal note, I urge my fellow Scouts & Guides in the State as well as in the National level to encourage their friends and family to be part of this wonderful Movement and help build a better world”.
PA Sangma block to come up at USTM
SHILLONG: Tura MP Conrad Sangma and legislator James Sangma jointly laid the foundation stone of PA Sangma international block at University of Science & Technology Meghalaya (USTM) on Wednesday. Both the sons of late Sangma recalled the contribution of their father and said that he had taken a lot of efforts in the expansion and establishment of educational institutions in various parts of Meghalaya.
Mafia group leader arrested in EJH
JOWAI: A leader of the militant outfit, Pnar United Army (PUA), who had demanded Rs 2 crore from one Forester Pajuh of Nongkhlieh village was arrested on Thursday night. The PUA leader was arrested from Rattacherra village. “Based on specific information, we arrested him. He will be interrogated for more information on the PUA,” the EJH SP said.
It may be mentioned, that Forester Pajuh has received a demand letter of Rs. 2 crore from a mafia group which identified itself as the PUA. “We hope more people will be arrested in the next few days”, the SP said.
Two held for ‘cattle smuggling’
SHILLONG: The Border Security Force personnel deployed at Fokachindi in West Garo Hills apprehended a 55-year-old man for allegedly smuggling cattle to Bangladesh. The man identified as Jainendra Sangma is a resident of Purakhasia in the district. BSF seized 27 animals worth Rs 2.8 lakh. In another incident, BSF at Gaobari in South West Garo Hills recently apprehended a 35-year-old man for alleged cattle smuggling. The man, identified as Nimai Mirandi, is from a village in Rongra. BSF seized 19 animals worth more than Rs 3 lakh from him.
The border sentinels have seized 69 cattle worth more than Rs 7.5 lakh in the last two days, BSF claimed in a statement.
Demand for college at Mawkynrew, Jongksha
SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Mawkynrew Circle recently organised a signature campaign to demand for a college either at Mawkynrew or Jongksha.
A college in either of these two places will benefit those who cannot afford to study in Shillong after completing their Class XII, the KSU said. Sordar of Jongksha, Olet Kharsahnoh, also said that a college in the area was the need of the hour.
Hailstorm-hit villager writes to CS for relief
SHILLONG: A resident of a hailstorm-affected village in West Khasi Hills has sought the intervention of the chief secretary in expediting distribution of relief materials.
Pranklip M. Marak of Moheshkolla, a village in Ranikor block where houses were damaged in the hailstorm on May 5, claimed in his letter to the chief secretary that no relief has come in the last three weeks. The hailstorm damaged houses and crops in 10 villages, including Moheshkolla, in the block.
NEHU community college at Wahiajer
JOWAI: Power Minister, Sniawbhalang Dhar inaugurated the Dean Dayal Upadhaya Community College for Skill Development and B.VOC, NEHU besides Dean Dayal Kaushal Vikas Kendra (Skil Development Centre), NEHU at Wahjaier village on Thursday. The programme was attended by NEHU Vice Chancellor, SK Shrivastava, Pro- Vice Chanchellor, Henry Lamin, Mowkaiaw MLA, Robinus Syngkon, Local MDC, Hermon Phawa among others.
“The College will benefit the young people of the region”, said Shrivastava and added that the setting up of the community college for skill development is one of the flagship programmes of the Centre.
