Two students among injured in Nongpoh landslide

NONGPOH/SHILLONG: Three persons, two of whom are school students, were injured in a landslide near Nongpoh inspection bungalow, around 400 meters from the national highway, on Friday.
The retaining wall of St Paul’s Higher Secondary School in Nongpoh collapsed around 4.20pm after heavy rain on Friday.
The wall fell on a tea stall injuring two teenagers, Pius Sharma and Darisha Ranjan, and a 38-year-old woman identified as Rina Barman.
Sharma, a resident of Umshangling, was critically injured and is admitted in Bethany Hospital in Nongpoh. He is a student of Class VI.
The tea stall owner managed to run out and was saved.
Headmistress Sr. Jemma J Dkhar said the incident occurred after school hours.
She said Sharma was buried under the debris and the staff at the school pulled him out. The student sustained injuries in his head and legs.
Nongpoh police and Fire and Emergency Services responded fast.
