SHILLONG/MAWKYRWAT: Security has been beefed up in Shillong in the wake of incidents of hurling of petrol bombs in some parts of the city on Saturday night.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner P.S Dkhar said that police personnel are keeping alert and magistrates are also on the watch to ensure that there are no ‘spill over effects’ in city. There were cases of petrol bomb attack on vehicles in some pockets of Jaiaw, Laban, Rynjah and Nongmynsong by unidentified miscreants on Saturday night.
Meanwhile, in Mawkyrwat, a group of miscreants attempted to burn the office of the Superintendent of Fisheries by throwing a petrol bomb on the door of the building.
South West Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, H.G. Lyngdoh said that the incident took place on Saturday night.
The miscreants first gathered three chairs and threw petrol bomb on the door
“However the damage was minimal as the chairs and door mats were wet,” the SP said adding the case was reported to the police only on Sunday afternoon.
He said that investigation into the incident is on, but no one has been arrested so far.
There were also two incidents of burning of tyres in two places, one at Dak Bangla and another at Block area near Sngap Syiem College, Mawkyrwat.
Asked whether the incident had any link with the violent protests against the ongoing railway project in Ri-Bhoi district, the SP said that the police are still investigating the case.
