TURA: At a funciton organised by Tura Natya Samity, one of the oldest socio-cultural organisations in town, and held at its own premises, the SSLC Toppers of 2017 of the Meghalaya Board of School Education were felicitated for their achievements in the presence of Pravin Bakshi, DC, West Garo Hills, and Terrence D Marak, Principal, Tura Goverment College, Timothy R Laloo, Controller of Examinations and other dignitaries.
Welcoming the guests and toppers, Dhurjyoti Choudhury, vice-president, Tura Natya Samity congratulated the toppers while also taking a trip down the memory lane by recalling the first toppers of MBoSE, from Garo Hills. In his deliberation marked by candidness and caution as well as humour, Pravin Bakshi and also the Executive Chairman, MBoSE, lauded the achievements of the toppers while almost lamenting the abysmal pass percentage in the district, which he says, calls for introspection.
Others who spoke on the occasion were Terence D Marak, Subodh Saha, DSEO and Fr. Albert Thyrniang, an elated principal of Don Bosco Higher Seondary School, toppers and parents.
‘The topper who went unnoticed’
It is perhaps this young lad’s destiny that fame does not come easy to him.
He was one of the creme de la creme of this year’s state position holders who went un-noticed when results were declared for no fault of his.
He appeared from a private school which has not yet obtained recognition by the board as a result of which he was marked as a private candidate in the results that were declared on last week.
This is why perhaps, that knowing that he has to walk a lonely road that Monimul Ekram Mondol from Paragon English School , Tikrikilla, a topper in the SSLC Examination 2017, keeps to himself and allows his actions speak louder than words. At first, this young lad appears like any teenager who is afraid to open up to strangers. But a few minutes into the conversation, a sharp mind opens up to talk about his determination and his dreams.  Son of a teacher , who is also the Master Coordinator of CRCC, he secured the 13th position in the SSLC examination 2017 , is  fond of both co-curricular and extra-curricular activites. He loves to break ice on the Volley Ball court and and the cricket pitch and says that he loves to bat like his icon Sachin Tendulkar. A person given to empathy and concern , this diligent student who put in  8 to hours of study despite great odds, aspires to take the hippocratic oath to serve humanity.
Recognition has finally been given where its due with Monimul getting felicitated with the other toppers by the deputy commissioner of West Garo Hills and other dignitaries at the Tura Natya Samity on Saturday evening.
