AICC observer to visit city today
SHILLONG: Rejaul Karim Laskar, the AICC minority department observer for Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram, will visit the city on Saturday. Laskar will call on Chief Minister Mukul Sangma at his residence to discuss about campaign for the 2018 Assembly elections. He will also visit the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Office in the city. The observer also plans to pay a visit to the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians in Shillong. He will arrive in Shillong at around 10 am and will head back on the same day.

HYC demands removing of BSF camps from WKH
SHILLONG: A delegation of HYC, West Khasi Hills met the CEM KHADC PN Syiem to seek his intervention to stop the Border Security Force (BSF) from setting up camps within the jurisdiction of West Khasi Hills. Syiem has assured them that he will direct the Himas to not issue NOC for the setting up of camps. In a memorandum to the Home Minister, HYC stated that there is no need for the BSF to set up camps as the district is a peaceful one. They also stated that usually with the setting up of camps, the BSF would often encroach into other people’s land.
South Garo Hills to

celebrate silver jubilee
BAGHMARA: South Garo Hills district which came into being on 18 June, 1992 is all set to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of the district from 16 to 18 June in Baghmara with the Chief Minister of Meghalaya as the chief guest.The highlight of the three-day celebration will be road race, fishing competition, children’s sports, sports for old men and women, quiz and extempore speech competitions, bike rally, etc. The indigenous culture of the sub-tribes inhabiting South Garo Hills, songs and dances and other cultural programmes will be the other attraction of the celebration.The best performers of the district in the HSSLC and SSLC will be felicitated. The junior football team of the district will also be felicitated for being the first runner-up in the recent inter-district football competitions held in Shillong.

Sensitisation programme on climate change to be held
Shillong: The NSS unit of Shillong College, will be conducting a one-day sensitisation programme on climate change for students on June 2 at the college Conference Hall from 11 a.m onwards. Betesen Ozukum from NEICORD, Shillong andProf. B. Mawrie of Environmental Science Department of the College will be the resource persons at the programme.The unit will also observe World Environment Day on June 5 by organising inter-school competitions for school children of Thynroit and Nongeitniang villages.

Review of NE edu system ‘need of the hour’
SHILLONG: A review of the education system in the North East is the need of the hour, president of the NEHU Alumni Association D. Syiem has said. Syiem, while addressing a gathering at the university’s Foundation Day on May 26, said the NEHU Alumni Association would initiate a number of outreach programmes addressing various issues in the community. NEHU organised a brainstorming session on ‘Reforming the Educational system in North East India’ on the occasion. Vice Chancellor S.K Srivastava congratulated the association for organising an event that addressed the issues on quality of education and employability of youths in the region. He was also critical on the lack of systematic educational planning, and proper utilisation of resources at all levels. Dr Brinda B. Kharbirymbai of the Department of Education, NEHU-Shillong, commented on reforming the higher education in the North East with special reference to Meghalaya. The brainstorming session was later summed up by A.N Rai, NAAC director and former Vice Chancellor of NEHU. Alumni members, including Vice Chancellor Prof. S.K.Srivastava, Pro-vice Chancellor Prof. Henry Lamin, Controller of Examinations Dr.L.Cajee, Prof. Don Syiem, President of NEHU Alumni, Prof. A. Nongkynrih, ,Prof C Nongbri, Prof.Amena Passah, Ian Khongmen attended the programme.

WKH village without power for two months
NONGSTOIN: Nongspung, which is 11 km from West Khasi Hills district headquarters Nongstoin, is without electricity for the past two months following technical glitches in a transformer in the village. Residents said they were baffled by MeECL’s apathy to either repair or install a new transformer. “Last week, we complained to MeECL officials but they said they were not repairing because most of the households in Nongspung did not pay electricity bills,” S. Marngar, a resident of Nongspung, told The Shillong Times.Another villager said every time the MeECL officials were contacted, they gave “false assurances” that repair is on. The villagers have urged MeECL and the Power Minister to repair the transformer as students preparing for half-yearly examinations are being affected.

EGH starts first driving classes
SHILLONG: The District Administration, East Garo Hills, Williamnagar in collaboration with the District Transport Officer and Integrated Basin Development and Livelihood Programme (IBDLP), Williamnagar under the Chief Minister Guidance Scheme started the first driving classes batch on May 23 at Model farm , Dobetkolgre .The complete course of the driving classes will be for three months. There are thirty six candidates who will be undergoing training in the programme. H.B. Marak, DC of East Garo Hills was the chief guest in the inaugural function.

HYC Malki Circle complains of electrical snag
SHILLONG: The HYC Malki Circle along with HYC Shillong circle met the Junior Engineer in-charge of complaint section of MeECL after complaints of an electrical snag noticed by residents on Wednesday. The residents noticed sparks on a wire attached to a transformer at Malki Khliehshnong Wahkdait which has raised apprehensions in the locality and prompted the members to call the complaint section of MeECL. However, there was no response from MeECL till 11 pm when the call was answered by a person, who the HYC alleged, was in an inebriated state. In a statement to the press, the organisation has demanded punitive action as the person was found to be in an inebriated condition even while on duty. The junior engineer has informed that the matter will be looked into seriously and DGM will be informed.

Awareness programme on drug abuse held at Ampati
Ampati: In the run up to International Day against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking which falls on June 27, the District Social Welfare Office, South West Garo Hills, organised an awareness programme on Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking for the youth and students at Ampati Degree College on Thursday. Addressing the students on the occasion, SWGH Deputy Commissioner Cyril V.D. Diengdoh highlighted on the ill effects of substance abuse and how substances like drugs and alcohol can become unnecessary distraction to the students and hinder them from achieving their full potential in life. He called upon the students to make right choices in life and not be limited by opportunities as they move towards their goals.

HSSLC toppers felicitated
SHILLONG: The Rotary Club of Orchid City,Shillong felicitated 36 toppers of the HSSLC Exams 2017 conducted by MBOSE in the Arts, Commerce & Science streams at a function held at Anton Hall on Wednesday. All the awardees were presented with a certificate, 4 way test of Rotary & a book.Israel Ingty, Commissioner Transport congratulated the students and lauded the parents. Fr. Gabriel, Vice Principal of St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School who was also present motivated the students to continue with their hard work. The functionaries of the Club encouraged the young achievers to contribute to society. Meanwhile, Brookside Adventist Higher Secondary school,Laitumkhrah felicitated , Bibek Bhattacharjee,  who secured 8th position in the SSLC examination. He is the son of  B.Bhattacharjee and Minoti Bhattacharjee. Mementos and cash award were distributed to the SSLC, HSSLC (Arts&Science) students with more than four letter marks. The school secured 100 percent pass percentage in SSLC and HSSLC (Arts &Science).

World Environment Day
Shillong/Nongstoin/Tura: On the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5, the West Garo Hills District Administration will organise a short Marathon. The Marathon beginning from Chandmari Playground at 7:00 AM and pass through Urban Marketing Hub Ringrey and junction of DM&HO will finally culminate at Deputy Commissioner’s Office.It is open to students of Class VIII up to Class XII with separate category for boys and girls, with the theme ‘Clean and Green Garo Hills’. Participats are to report at Chandmari Playground at 6:30 AM. Besides cash prizes of Rs.10,000, Rs.7,000 and Rs.5,000 for the first three positions in both the boys’ and girls’ categories, certificates of appreciation will be given to all the runners.  Meanwhile in Nongstoin, the Basin Development Unit in collaboration with the District Administration West Khasi Hills District, Nongstoin will be observing World Environment Day on June 6 at Trysem Hall, office of the DC West Khasi Hills. Skit competition, wall painting, speech contest, singing competition, awareness march and slogan competition will also be held.

BSNL optical wires between Nangalbibra, Mendipathar soon
TURA: Customers of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) are likely to see an improvement in services as the company will lay optical ground wires between Nangalbibra and Mendipathar. BSNL senior official K.K Saxena commissioned the link in the presence of East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Hubert B. Marak and P.G Nirmal, ITS, GMTD, Meghalaya.Saxena said the commissioning of the optical wires in Williamnagar will improve internet speed as well as ensure better cellular service. He assured that all pending leased line circuits will soon be commissioned that will help customers, including banks which are currently using VSAT connections.EGH SP Vivekanand Singh and Executive Engineer of MePDCL, P. Chetri attended the function.

Dairy farm workshop focuses on fodder production
TURA: A two-day training programme on ‘Production of different types of fodder for livestock feeding’ concluded on Thursday. The programme was conducted by ICAR, KVK, on its campus near Dobasipara. The high cost of cattle fodder is one of the major problems for dairy farmers in Garo Hills. To help solve the problem, KVK Tura is encouraging farmers to cultivate different varieties of fodder. Fodder seeds and planting materials were also distributed by KVK. Altogether 16 farmers participated in the programme.

No power supply to EJH
JOWAI: Due to the damage of transformers at 132/33 KV, 2×20 MVA, power supply to entire East Jaintia Hills district will remain disrupted for some days. This was informed by the Executive Engineer, Khliehriat Distribution Division, MePDCL, Khliehriat. The Engineer said that every effort will be made to restore the power supply at the earliest in a phase wise manner.
