HYC Jaiaw circle wants clarification from central body
SHILLONG: HYC Jaiaw Circle general secretary, Wankit Ryntathiang has alleged that the HYC Central Executive Committee (CEC) and the HYC Shillong City has bypassed HYC Jaiaw circle in matters related to the organisation. Addressing a press conference on Friday, Ryntathiang alleged that HYC has instructed its circle members to submit the memorandum of its 14 points demand to their respective MLAs and MDCs. According to him, the Shillong City members submitted the memorandum to the MDC and MLA of Shillong West constituency and did not take the Jaiaw circle into consideration and the Jaiaw circle delegation are seeking a clarification from them on this matter. In this connection, they wrote to the CEC HYC and Shillong city as they bypassed circle members. However, the letter was torn apart by CEC vice president, Donbok Kharlyngdoh, the members of Jaiaw circle alleged.“We have served them a deadline of one week to clarify on the issue and we demand an apology from Kharlyngdoh,” Ryntathiang said.When asked whether they will leave the organisation, the members maintained that they will not leave the organisation.
MCTA extends its support to Arunachal teacher’s association
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya College Teachers’ Association(MCTA) has expressed its solidarity and extended its full support to the Arunachal Pradesh College Teachers’ Association(APCTA) in their current struggle pertaining to college teachers being deprived the opportunity to Research Supervisorship by Rajiv Gandhi University, Arunachal Pradesh. The association said that in most universities, the opportunity of Research Supervisorship is extended to all qualified teachers of colleges as per the UGC Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of M.Phil/Ph.D. Degree Regulations, 2016. However, this opportunity is also not extended to college teachers in Meghalaya. While supporting the APCTA in its on-going movement , the MCTA said that it will take up this issue for the benefit of college teachers.
Ampati observes Clean and Green Day
Ampati: As part of the celebration of World Environment Day 2017, the people of South West Garo Hills observed Clean and Green Day throughout the district by conducting cleaning drives and plantation of trees in and around the district headquarters at Ampati on Friday. Many of the participants wore green to express their concern for the environment and switched off all electrical appliances in offices and schools for a few hours to save energy. In the premises of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, the DC Cyril V.D. Diengdoh addressed the officials and staff before distributing saplings to the officers and staff and leading them in the tree plantation. Besides the school students and the government employees, Ampati Youth Welfare Club, Ampati Women’s Group, the Bazar Committees and other NGOs also participated in the cleaning drive.In the run up to the celebration of World Environment Day in Ampati, competitions have been organised for school students for the past three days including painting, essay writing, debate, ex-tempore and quiz competitions under the theme “Connecting People with Nature”. The competitions were organised by Basin Development Unit, Ampati in collaboration with District School Education Office, Ampati. On June 5, “Connect with Nature” Run is being organised by the District Sports Office, Ampati, which is open to all and will be flagged off from the Students’ Field at 7 am. This will be followed by the main celebration of World Environment Day at Multi-Facility Centre.
Tura Church to observe Global Day of Prayer on Sunday
TURA: Hawakhana Baptist Church Pastor, Rev Frithing D Sangma informed that the Global Day of Prayer (GDOP) will be observed on Sunday at 3 pm at the Church premises in Tura. It may be mentioned that on every 50th day after Easter Sunday, Christians from different denominations all over the world observe this day to pray for various global issues that threatens the well being of mankind. The GDOP, Tura Committee has appealed to Christians of different churches to come together and join hands in prayer on that day.
GSU for upgradation of Baghmara Civil Hospital
TURA: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Southern Zone on Thursday met the District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO) in Baghmara to complain about the pitiable condition of Baghmara Civil Hospital. Stating that the situation in the hospital was an embarrassment both to the authorities and the government the union sought the upgradation of the hospital complete with all necessary facilities. The meeting came following their visit to the hospital where they found that the X-Ray machine had been damaged, most of the ceiling fans are non-functional and leaking roofs which had damaged the mattresses. In addition, it was found that the toilet in front of the hospital had developed leaks and bad smell was emanating from it causing inconvenience to visitors and patients.
CM urged to look into Dadenggre social issues
TURA: Several social organisations from Dadenggre including ADE, FKJGP, ASWA, AYWO, FAF and AAYF have sought the upgradation of the Dadenggre Civil Sub-Division into a full-fledged district. In their memorandum to Chief Minister Mukul Sangma the organisations pointed out that the demand for its upgradation into a district is a genuine one given that Dadenggre is the oldest civil sub-division in Garo Hills. “Dadenggre is still lacking in many Sub-Divisional head offices even after many years of becoming a civil sub-division. We want it to be upgraded into a full-fledged district so as to make way for development,” the organisations said. Meanwhile in a separate release, the same organisations have demanded the appointment of a full-fledged Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC) for Dadenggre region which has also been long pending. The organisations also sought the establishment of a Sub-Divisional PWD (Road) Office at Dadenggre, the blacktopping of the Dadenggre to Chibinang via Bikkonggre Road and repair of Tura to Phulbari via Rongchugre Road.
Science exhibition held at NGH
Resubelpara: District Level Science Exhibition under RMSA was held at Dilma A’pal Secondary School, Mendipathar on 1st and 2nd June which was inaugurated by the DC S.C.Sadhu. The two-day event was organised by District School Education Officer & District Project Coordinator, RMSA, East Garo Hills, Williamnagar.The DC said such exhibition provides opportunity for the students to display innovation in science. He also stressed upon the teacher to act as the stimulators in nurturing the interest of the students. The theme for this year’s exhibition is ‘Science, Society & Environment’ and students from various schools of the district showcased the models based on the sub themes viz natural resources conservation, mathematical modeling, health and environment etc. The best selected students will participate in the state level competition representing the district.

Coal laden trucks detained
SHILLONG: On May 31, police detected two vehicles (AS-01B-2351) driven by Hartu Phawa and another vehicle (ML-04B-4724) suspected to be carrying coal beyond permissible limit and without challan at Khliehriat in East Jaintia Hills.
16-year-old girl abducted
SHILLONG: Milres Nonglang lodged a complaint that two persons, Md. Rophik Ali of Assam and Clebert M Sangma, abducted her 16-year-old daughter from her residence at Nongkyndang, Aradonga in West Khasi Hills. Later, the abducted victim was traced from Hahim, Assam.
