Section 144 in Ri Bhoi relaxed before jubilee

SHILLONG/NONGPOH: The Ri Bhoi district administration revoked the prohibitory order under Section 144 on Sunday.
In a statement, the district administration said the decision was taken in view of the silver jubilee celebrations of the district that will start from Monday and continue till June 9.
“It was considered that people may not be able to participate and enjoy the celebrations wholeheartedly, if the restrictions are continued,” Deputy Commissioner C.P Gotmare said.
He said various NGOs, eminent citizens and public leaders had appealed to people of Ri Bhoi district to maintain peace and tranquility.
They had also requested the district administration to consider revocation of Section 144.
“However, restrictions on carrying of firearms, sharp weapons, lathis and any other weapons, which may be used for intimidation, will continue,” Gotmare said.
He said adequate security measures were taken to tackle law and order problems or emergencies in view of the silver jubilee celebrations.
Meanwhile, with the Bhoi District completing 25 years (1992-2017) of existence on Sunday, the Ri Bhoi District Silver Jubilee Organising Committee has planned a week-long celebration programme June 5 to 9.
On the occasion, the committee has appealed to the people of the district and the State as a whole to take part in the celebrations.
The official celebration of the Ri Bhoi Foundation Day will be held at NSCA stadium, Pahamsyiem.
The celebration will showcase the rich cultural diversity of the Bhoi people. People can enjoy traditional food, games, drinks, art forms etc., at the venue of the festival.
A souvenir with a brief note on “Society and Culture-In a nutshell, the Bhois’ Land Tenure System, folklore etc.” will also be released during the inaugural function.
