New school building inaugurated at Ampati

Ampati: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has stated that schools should be able to meet the educational needs of the students and called upon the communities and particularly the parents to be alert and assertive on the quality of education that is being given to the children to enable them to reach their full potentialities. He was addressing the gathering as the chief guest after inaugurating the new school building of Garudachal Vidyapeeth Secondary School at Ghasura, Ampati in the presence to the Deputy Commissioner Cyril V.D. Diengdoh, Superintendent of Police, Bobby W. Momin, local leaders and gaonburas, officials of Education department, school managing committee members, teachers, parents and the students, among others. The new school building was constructed under Chief Minister’s Special Rural Development Fund at a cost of Rs 22 lakh. It may be mentioned that the school was established in 2004 and the first batch of its students have appeared for SSLC examinations for the first time this year.

SPARK opens education centre at Mawlong

SHILLONG: SPARK has set up an educational centre for the underprivileged at Mawlong Village, New Shillong on Thursday. The centre was previously being run in a very congested place due to lack of adequate space which hindered the teaching learning process as there were a huge number of out of school children in the Mawlong village who were needed to be enrolled in education. SPARK approached different places for support towards construction of the school and the Rotary Club of Shillong extended necessary help in major part of the construction. President of Rotary Club K.S. Elangbam and other members of the Club, headman of the village Dino Mawrie and village secretary John Mukhim attended the inaugural programme.

Experts for biographies of NE heroes in Hindi

SHILLONG: A two-day workshop on ‘use of Hindi as official language’ which was concluded on Tuesday in NEC suggested including the biographies of Northeast heroes in Hindi and other regional languages. Organised by DoNER Ministry, the meet highlighted on coherent use of Hindi and the Indian languages for national integration and harmony. Members of the Hindi Salahkar Samity, Ministry of DoNER, Dr Rajendra Singh Chandel, Shastri Vipan Khajuria, Dr. Balwant Shastri, Dr. Lakshmi Narayan Mittal, Sujaya Dey and Dr. Kshirada Kumar Saikia stressed on publication of biographies of great heroes and personalities of Northeastern region in Hindi and other Indian languages. C. H. Kharshiing, Planning Adviser, NEC chaired the session.

Panel discussion on mining held

SHILLONG: The North-East Indian Council for Social Science Research (N.E.I.C.S.S.R) organised a World Environment Day programme in collaboration with Shillong Law College. The programme was inaugurated by Aldous Mawlong and included a panel discussion on ‘Mining in Meghalaya and its consequences’ at the Shillong Law College campus in Dhankheti. P.M Passah, president of the N.E.I.C.S.S.R and Supreme Court lawyer S. Birla were among those present. An Essay competition was also organised on the topic, ‘Impact of development on Environment’.

Lawyer kidnap bid foiled in JH

SHILLONG: The Jaintia Hills District Bar Association, Jowai in its special general meeting held recently condemned the uncivilised act of Emerald Siangshai, who allegedly tried to abduct a female member of the Bar Association on May 31 from the Court premises. The Bar Association appreciated the prompt action taken by the SP, West Jaintia Hills and his team resulting in the rescue of the lawyer and arrest of the accused. The Bar Association asked the police to speed up the investigation

Stones pelted at Social Forestry office in Ri Bhoi

SHILLONG: Miscreants pelted stones at the office of Social Forestry at Umdiker in Ri Bhoi district at around 11.30 pm on Wednesday. As a result, some window panes of the office were damaged.

Rapist held in West Khasi Hills

SHILLONG: Police arrested one person after he allegedly raped a 14 year old girl in a village in West Khasi Hills. A complaint was lodged that on October 13 last year one Welldoness Hoojon (23) raped one fourteen year old girl at Nonglang village and threatened her of dire consequences if she disclosed the matter. The accused surrendered before police and was arrested.

Dacoity in South Garo Hills

SHILLONG: Armed dacoits entered the house of Chiran Marak of Jadi in South Garo Hills in the wee hours of Thursday and took away a loptop. On receipt of information, a police team from Jadi outpost rushed to the spot and spotted a group of dacoits numbering 15-20 who fired at the police team with small arms. Police retaliated and an encounter ensued but the miscreants managed to escape.

Examination rescheduled

SHILLONG: In view of the request received from the aspiring candidates due to their inability to download their admit cards following irregular power supply in West Jaintia Hills, the District Selection Committee has taken a decision to reschedule the exam for the post of SA scheduled on June 10 to June 24, 2017. The venues and timings of the exam remain unchanged. The date for downloading the admit cards has extended to June 23.

Awareness cum cleaning drive at Iew Mawkyrwat

Mawkyrwat: The office of Sankur- Rikynti Khain Nonglang & Mawkyrwat Hat in collaboration with the office of the Deputy Commissioner & Chairman, Block Development Unit, Mawkyrwat organised an awareness programme on Solid and Liquid Waste Management cum cleaning drive at Mawkyrwat market on Wednesday. Traders, officials of different departments and members of the public attended the programme. R. Lyngdoh, Deputy Commissioner Cum Chairman of Basin Development Unit, Mawkyrwat was the chief guest on the occasion.

Awareness on ill effects of tobacco organised

SHILLONG: The National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) NER Local Chapter organised a science awareness programme at MeECL Secondary School, Sumer, Ro Bhoi on Wednesday to create awareness among the school children on the ill-effects of tobacco. The programme was a part of the activities organised by the NASI Local Chapter to commemorate “No Tobacco Day” observed annually. A popular talk titled ‘A curtain raiser on Cancer and its tobacco connection’ was delivered by Prof. R.N Sharan of the Biochemistry Department, NEHU. Earlier, GVK EMRI, Meghalaya, conducted an awareness programme and organised a free Medical Health Camp to mark World No Tobacco Day at Lumparing Sports Club, Shillong. Around 100 people registered for the Health Camp and received free medical checkup and medicines. DHS (MI) supported the cause with supply of free medicines.

New footbridge at Jongksha

SHILLONG: KHADC MDC from Mawkynrew Constituency, Banteidor Lyngdoh, on Wednesday inaugurated a footbridge over Umsngad river at Dong Wahshnong falling under Jongksha. Speaking on the occasion, he said that he will bring in transparency in administration and maintained that he was the servant while the people were the leaders. He also inaugurated a footpath at Namlang in Wahshnong.

Former GH MLA joins UDP From Our Correspondent

TURA: A former Garo Hills MLA along with another aspiring candidate for the 2018 Assembly elections joined the United Democratic Party (UDP) on Wednesday. Former MLA from 54 Mahendraganj Constituency Nidhuram Hajong along with Chris Kabul A Sangma, a ticket aspirant from 48- Selsella Constituency, joined the UDP in a meeting organised by the party’s West Garo Hills District Committee at Rongkhon Derangittim near Tura. Hajong and Sangma joined the party in the presence of UDP state vice president and district president, Utpal Arengh and others.

Wheel chair artists from Delhi to perform in city

SHILLONG: Rotary Club Orchid City Shillong will organize a charity show on June 10 at U Soso Tham Auditorium at 5.30pm on Saturday. The function is aimed at raising funds to build toilet blocks in schools and to inculcate habits of hygiene by constructing wash in schools (WiNS), project of Rotary International. A renowned dance troupe from Delhi led by Guru Pasha will perform “Miracle on Wheels”- a dance programme performed by differently abled Wheel Chair Artists. The group is a Guinness Book of Records holder for their performances and Rashtrapathi Award winner for special performances.
