SHILLONG/JOWAI: BJP State president Shibun Lyngdoh claimed that many big names, including some ministers and sitting MLAs, would join the BJP officially by the end of this month.
He, however, did not name them saying their names would be released only when they join the party officially.
Meanwhile, a former Cabinet Minister and UDP leader R.L Tariang was felicitated at Amlarem after he joined the party during the celebration of the NDA government’s three years at the Centre on Saturday.
Lyngdoh said Tariang along with his supporters had joined the party long time back but his supporters wanted their leader to be felicitated.
The BJP president, while highlighting the achievements of the NDA government under Narendra Modi, said the Mukul Sangma-led Government was not willing to implement central schemes. Assam BJP MLA Bhabesh Kalita, who was presented on the occasion, requested the people of Meghalaya to vote out the Congress.
“The Congress has ruled in India for more than 60 years but could not make any change but BJP has done it in three years… We have brought a change in Assam and we want the same in Meghalaya,” he said.
Saturday’s programme was part of the party’s statewide celebrations and three public sector units (NEEPCO, BSNL and IOC) were engaged for the purpose. The BJP youth wing also felicitated Sakani Roi Tariang, a student of North Liberty School in Amlarem, who ranked 6th in the SSLC.
Around 500 people from Amlarem sub-division attended the function that was organised at an expense
of more than Rs 8 lakh, according to NEEPCO Deputy Manager P. Suchiang.
However, when asked about the expenditure and whether the PSU was used for propaganda of the saffron party political gain, the state BJP president said he was not aware of the expenditure.
