Workshop on landslide risk mitigation

NONGSTOIN: One-day workshop on Landslide Risk Mitigation was organised by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Nongstoin on June 9. Arunkumar Kembhavi, Deputy Commissioner, West Khasi Hills District inaugurated the programme.
Speaking in the programme, Kembhavi said that the objective behind conducting this workshop is to introduce technological interventions in addressing landslide issues especially along national highways, soil erosion in river banks and others. He emphasized on the potential use of Vetiver grass not only for landslide mitigation but for other purposes as well viz fodder, aesthetic, mosquito repellant, cosmetics, making huts, river cleaning, terrace farming.
A field visit to one of the landslide prone area in the district was also carried out, whereby the illustrative example on the plantation of Vetiver grass was demonstrated by a team of experts.
