SHILLONG: The State police force will be strengthened to deal with the issue of crime against women and children.
Talking to reporters here on Wednesday after a meeting of the State Security Commission, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said, “The organisation (police force) will be strengthened in such a manner that investigation and charge-sheeting of all crimes against women and children are expedited.”
Sangma is the chairman of the Commission. Stating that the focus of Wednesday’s meeting was on rising crimes against women and children, Sangma said there should not be further delay in dealing with the pending cases. “We want to have the most efficient police organisation to deal with crimes with a special focus on crimes against women and children,” he said.
The chief minister maintained that knowledge of law will deter people from resorting to criminal activities and police and other line departments, along with civil society organisations, should sensitise citizens.
He added that measures will be taken to strengthen the police force to ensure that the internal security apparatus is capable of meeting the challenges. The CM called for strengthening of the training mechanism in the police force to have efficient management of the organisation.
