Harassment to religious minorities in BJP ruled states decried
Shillong: All India Congress Committee Minority Department’s Observer for Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram Rejaul Karim Laskar has expressed concern over rising incidents of atrocities and harassments meted out to members of the member’s of religious minority communities, especially Christians in BJP ruled states. Citing the example of the arrest of a Catholic Nun in Satna, Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday, Laskar said that the nun was arrested without any evidence on malafide and false complaint from Bajrang Dal and Viswa Hindu Parishad and was locked up for 12 hours before being released for lack of evidence. He strongly condemned the harassment meted out to the innocent nun and demanded strong action to be taken against those responsible so that no such incident happen again in future.
Ri Bhoi DC directive on solid waste management
Shillong: The Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi District has under Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 prohibited waste generators from throwing, burning or burying solid waste generated by the people and not to litter i.e., throw or dispose of any waste such as paper, water bottles, liquor bottles, soft drink cans, tetra packs, fruit peel, wrappers etc on the streets, open public spaces, drains, water bodies and to segregate the waste at source as prescribed under these rules and handover the segregated waste to the authorized waste pickers or waste collectors.The DC also directed the street sweepers not to burn tree leaves but to store them separately and handover to the waste collector authorised by the local body. He also prohibits open burning of waste on lands including landfill sites. He urge the local authoritie to ensure compliance to the provisions of Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 and order/judgement passed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on the subject matter.
Training on Mission Unite held at Ampati
AMPATI: The training on ‘Mission Unite’ themed ‘U n I towards enrollment’ for nodal teachers and Booth Level Officers (BLO) was organised by the Deputy Commissioner (Election) at Ampati. The Chief Election Officer has mandated the appointment of Nodal teachers in every school to create awareness on the electoral process and facilitate the enrollment of left out eligible electors. Speaking on the importance of maximum participation by election officials to achieve the desired results, South West Garo Hills EAC M R Marak said that the exercise was to train concerned officials to minimize the deficit of eligible electors in the Electoral Rolls of the district. He lauded the efforts of EAC & AERO 55 Salmanpara (ST) Assembly Constituency F Boro for her efforts to minimize the deficit in enrollment of eligible voters in her area. Marak later led the gathering in the taking of pledge by election officials.Various resource persons, including ASE, S. Banai familiarized the trainees with registration procedures and forms. Among others who spoke on the occasion was EAC, F. Boro.
NEHU workshop for govt officials concludes
TURA: The workshop under the theme ‘managing people and performance in organisations’ for senior government officials and executives conducted by North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Tura campus concluded here on Friday. The workshop aimed to equip them with evolving management concepts, practices, perspective and approaches. It was inaugurated by West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Pravin Bakshi. Speaking at the inaugural programme, Bakshi highlighted the importance of such programme, which enables officers to further their skills. A total of 20 senior officials and executives took part in the programme, which included officials from PWD (roads), Tura Civil Hospital, Water Resource Division, District Sports Officer, ICAR, District Disaster Management Authority, District Agriculture Officer, SBI, District Horticulture Office, Mount Dura Academy, MBoSE and PHE.
MLCU kickstarts Aurora 2017 from children’s home
Shillong : With the main objective to strengthen students in being a blessing to themselves, their families, the society and to the world, Martin Luther Christian University on Friday organised a visit to the Rilang Children’s Home, A Don Bosco Centre for Child Rights, at Nongshilliang, Nongthymmai. The visit is also a kick start for the upcoming University Week, ”AURORA 2017″, which is a welcoming break from the rush and tension of the academic world. Speaking at the event, the Coordinator of the Students Affair Committee, Pamela Nonghuloo said, “The beauty of life lies in sharing of love and joy with people who need it the most. The joy and happiness painted on the children of Rilang Children Home is the best reward for the celebration of AURORA 2017 in MLCU”. The students of MLCU organised short games for the boys and songs were also performed by the students of the department of Fine Arts, MLCU. Gifts, cash donation and other items were donated by the staff and students of MLCU to Rilang Children’s Home.
Yoga Day celebrations at NEHU from today
SHILLONG: North-Eastern Hill University will celebrate International Day of Yoga for the third year on its campus and has planned a series of events from June 17 to 19 with the main celebration on June 21. An essay competition will be held on June 19 and the finale on June 21. Yoga practice session, demonstration on yoga, lectures and poster and book exhibitions are on the list of programmes which will be held at the multi-use convention hall from 9:30 am onwards.
