Fake news agency ‘editor’ held

RESUBELPARA: A 32-year-old man, who was on the lookout list of police in North Garo Hills for allegedly running a fake news agency and updating false news on social media, surrendered at Resubelpara police station on Monday.
Feroze G. Momin of Bajengdoba was a close associate of Tengsrang A. Sangma alias A’chura WeGaro A’gitok II who used to threaten civil society members and was behind the fake news, ‘A pastor raped a girl’, on Facebook.
Momin calls himself the editor of Garo National News.
The other illegal news agents are — The Garo Hills Times, A’we Times, Simsang Times, Resu Noksik Nokbak and Bajengdoba Times.
Based on the statements of Supriya D Momin, a 22-year-old college student from Assam who was arrested last Thursday for her alleged links with GNLA, and Tengsrang A Sangma, police started investigation.
Momin helped Tengsrang to act as the GSU secretary of Emangre Unit of South Garo Hills and extort money from businessmen.
The pastor who was maligned on Facebook had lodged an FIR and search for Momin started on June 12.
The pastor was instrumental in bringing several militants in the region back to the mainstream.
