Guwahati: A team of Mumbai Police is in Guwahati looking for a self-proclaimed ‘baba’ in the Nilachal hills of Guwahati, atop which is situated the shaktipeeth Kamakhya temple, on allegations of rape and blackmail of a German tourist.
Police sources said here on Tuesday that a joint team of Mumbai and Guwahati Police have been searching the Kamakhya temple and its peripheries for the wanted ‘baba’, whose real name is Sailal Hiralal Gadiya.
Mumbai Police are acting on a complaint filed by a German tourist, alleging that the baba had called her to Kamakhya temple on pretext of performing a ‘yajna’ for her ailing father and then, raped her here.
The baba had allegedly video-taped the incident and had been blackmailing the tourist, who had paid about Rs 3 lakh to him before finally approaching Mumbai Police for help.
The search for the babaji comes on the eve of the famous Anbubachi Mela in the Kamakhya temple, which will get underway on Wednesday.
Sages and mystics from across the world congregate at Kamakhya for the annual four-day Mela, which also draws tourists and devotees, with the total visitors during last year’s Mela crossing 15 lakh in number. (UNI)
