SHILLONG: The government has initiated steps to prosecute the police officers involved in the custodial death of 20-year-old Balsan Marak three years ago.
Balsan, who was arrested in connection with the torture of 12 girls in Tura, died on May 20, 2014, while he was in judicial custody after being brought from the Tura district jail to the civil hospital for treatment.
Later, the mother of the victim, Meena Marak, filed a petition in the High Court seeking compensation and an inquiry by the CBI.
When the matter came up for hearing on Tuesday, the government advocate made a submission that the investigation is complete and the prosecution sanction has also been issued. The charge sheet will be filed shortly.
Taking note of the submissions made and at the request of the government, the matter was adjourned to be listed after two weeks.
Earlier in September 2015, the court had directed West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi to deposit Rs 10 lakh with the registry of the court to pay as compensation amount to Balsan’s mother.
