SHILLONG: The Congress said on Tuesday it would support the UDP-HSPDP members and an Independent who are set to table a no-confidence motion against the Executive Committee of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) led by P.N Syiem on Wednesday.
However, the national party clarified that it would extend support only if asked for and it has no intention to move a no-trust motion against the Executive Committee.
The statement comes a day after three regional parties in the Council withdrew support to the coalition and Syiem reacted saying the MDCs “cannot topple the Executive Committee without the Congress”.
Referring to the regional parties who on Monday withdrew support to the coalition, Congress leader in the KHADC Manstudy Nongrem said the national and the regional parties have no link on the issue of moving a no-confidence motion.
“If they need our help, we will support. Though they (regional party MDCs) are also in the opposition, there is no such approach on their part to join or work together with us,” he told reporters at the end of the first day of the budget session on Tuesday.
UDP Parliamentary Party leader Teinwell Dkhar said they would move the no-trust motion on Wednesday along with HSPDP and independent MDC Pyniaid Sing Syiem. UDP has four members and HSPDP has two.
Meanwhile, KHNAM member Adelbert Nongrum will not be part of those who move the no confidence motion but will not back out from withdrawing support to the PDF.
“The CEM has moved the resolutions during the session to protect the interests of the ingenuous people which has been the demands of the KHNAM. We will only follow up on the issues,” he said.
The members will submit the no-trust motion to Council chairman L.G Nongsiej on Wednesday morning prior to the session.
Nongrem cited the case of Nongkrem MDC H.S Shylla who sought the support of the Congress to move a no-confidence motion against the Syiem-led Executive Committee during the last session but added that none of the regional parties approached this time.
The Congress leader said a new alliance is needed if the members who withdrew support to PDF want to form a new Executive Committee.
