SHILLONG: UDP President Donkupar Roy on Wednesday said after stitching the UDP-HSPDP coalition, the party will reach out to the remaining regional parties, KHNAM in Khasi Hills and Garo National Council (GNC) in Garo Hills, for similar alliance.
“We are working on the broader alliance of regional parties ahead of the Assembly polls,” Roy told The Shillong Times.
A meeting will be held in this regard in Tura on June 23 to work out the pre-poll alliance with GNC, the UDP leader said.
UDP could not secure a single seat in the last Assembly elections and the District Council polls in Garo Hills.
The party wants to ensure that its candidates win in the next Assembly polls in Garo Hills to spread is presence in that region.
UDP had a few legislators in the past from Garo Hills, including B.G Momin and Nimarson Momin.
Roy, however, ruled out any pre-poll understanding with the NPP and BJP though UDP is part of the grand alliance of the BJP-led North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) that was formed after the Assam election results.
