SP urges public to not circulate juvenile’s photo
Shillong: SP Vivek Syiem has urged the public to refrain from circulating the photo of a minor in social media with coloured remarks as it will invite stringent legal action under the Juvenile Justice Act. It may be informed that one minor girl (in pink jacket) was caught by the public on June 20, with a mobile phone and was brought to Pastuer Beat House. However, her picture has gone viral with caption saying that she is a drug peddler. The SP has urged the general public that such forwarding and labelling of a juvenile, who requires correctional steps would only make the minor more withdrawn from the correctional course and detrimental to her well being.

MTC workers’ union asks the govt not to transfer its director
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Transport Corporation Workers Union has asked the State Government to stay the transfer order of MTC MD A Nikhla.The General Secretary of the Union, K Rumnong said that the corporation in the last nine months has seen many changes and development under the leadership of A Nikhla.The union said that the Government time and again has made efforts to revive MTC but it could not be achieved for want of an efficient MD and now when the corporation has an efficient MD, the Government is surprisingly transferring the officer.

Teachers’ body threatens to agitate if NIOS result not declared
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya SSA Schools’ Association (MSSASA) has threatened an agitation and also to write to the State Government on the ‘harassment’ of National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) for delay in announcement of results. In a statement issued to the press, Aristotle C. Rymbai, president of the Association, criticised the delay in results announcement of the Diploma in Elementary Education (D.EL.ED) for the Meghalaya teachers’ final year batch 2015,which was held in December last year. He said that the lackadaisical attitude of the NIOS will hamper the future of Adhoc teachers, deficit and Government institutions. The State Government has signed an agreement with NIOS in 2013 to train 7822 teachers in the elementary level comprising of SSA, Adhoc, deficit and Government schools in which 4385 were registered in the 1st batch (2013) and 3437 were registered in 2nd batch (2014).

Nongtalang College accredited Grade B by NAAC
SHILLONG: Nongtalang College which is the first college in West Jaintia hills district and also the first college in the Border area has been accredited Grade – B by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) on June 9. On this auspicious occasion, the Principal of Nongtalang College, P. Tariang expressed gratitude to all the teachers, Alumni Association of the college, students, the parents, the Governing body, Nongtalang village local committee, and the people of Nongtalang village. Nongtalang College was established in 1988 and has been a driving force in imparting higher education to the student community of the area which covers a radius of 40 kms bordering Bangladesh.

International day against drug abuse to be organised
Shillong: The Deputy Commissioner Ri Bhoi District, Nongpoh has informed that the International Day against drug abuse would be observed on June 30 at 10 am. The programme will begin with a rally from MUDA Complex, Nongpoh to DC office and back followed by an awareness programme where in resource persons from different fields will deliver their speech on drug abuse and illicit trafficking. Headmen, local leaders, women organisation, NGOs and youths are requested to participate in the programme. Meanwhile, SAN-KER in collaboration with the District Administration, Office of the District Social Welfare Officer & the Officers’ Club, West Jaintia Hills will also observe ‘International Day Against Substance Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’. To commemorate this day, they are organising a Poster, Singing and Short-Skit Competition on June 24 at the New Dulong Community Hall, Jowai at 9:00 a.m. A workshop and awareness programme on ”A Substance-Free World” will be held on June 26.

Dorbar Shnong Pynthorumkhrah felicitated by urban affairs dept
SHILLONG: The Urban Affairs Department felicitated the Dorbar Shnong of Pynthorumkhrah-Golflink for its effort in relocation of street hawkers. The Dorbar Shnong established the Hawkers market at Pynthorumkhrah -Golflink. Urban Affairs minister, RV Lyngdoh appreciated the effort of the Dorbar Shnong and the MLA of the area AL Hek to set up the market. He urged the people to cooperate with the MLA for the development of the area.

Services to run on GSTN portal for taxpayers
Shillong: The Deputy Commissioner of Taxes, Meghalaya has informed that from June 25 onwards, various services will run on the GSTN portal which includes migration of existing taxpayers, registration of new taxpayers under GST, TDS registration, TCS registration and registration of OIDBAR (Online Information and Database Access and Retrieval Services). Taxpayers have 3 months time to submit the documents and information. Till then, they can operate with Provisional ID, i.e., the GST Identification Number or GSTIN. New taxpayers have 30 days to apply for registration and need not rush to the portal on the first day of opening of the portal.

RKM organises its biennial exhibition
Shillong: Ramakrishna Mission Higher Secondary School, Sohra held its Biennial Exhibition on June 22 and 23 in its school premises at Sohra.  The exhibition was inaugurated by BibhutiBhusanBiswal , Director,  NIT,  Meghalaya who was also the chief guest. A total of 58 exhibits covering different subjects like, English, History, Geography, Economics, Political Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and computers have been displayed for all who visited the exhibition. A special segment on the universal ideas behind the establishment of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission was also displayed for the viewers. Other dignitaries present was the Special  Guest R. M. Pariat, DSEO, East Khasi Hills, and the Guests of Honour  Vincent  Nianglang, SDSEO, Sohra, and Headman P. Tariang of Khliehshnong Village, Sohra.

Guv attends ICAR seminar
SHILLONG: A two-day national seminar on “Nutrition Sensitive Agriculture” got underway at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam on Friday. The seminar was organised by ICAR Research Complex in collaboration with Deendayal Research Institute. The first day of the seminar witnessed eminent speakers from across India sensitising the participants on Nutrition Sensitive Agriculture. Speaking on the occasion, Governor of Assam and Meghalaya Banwari Lal Purohit said that the change in culture has lead to the change in food habit which ultimately leads to a malnourished nation. He added that local delicacies have enormous nutrients’ which needs to be identified and research should be conducted in the aspect of the food and nutrition both. Soil nutrients should be checked so that healthy harvest can be achieved. “If the soil is deprived of nutrients the soul of the soil is lost. The scientist should aim to create a viable agriculture”, he said. Dr. S.V.Ngachan, Director, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam , P.B Acharya, Governor of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, Dr. Vanadana Shiva, Internationally acclaimed environmentalist, Archana Chintis, Minister for Welfare and Child Development, Madhya Pradesh were also present.

‘Drug traffickers’ held in SWKH
SHILLONG: Three persons have been arrested from the border area in South West Khasi Hills for allegedly trafficking drugs. In a statement to the media, the Border Security Force said the troops deployed at Barsora in the district accosted three men on a bike with no number plate on the Gumaghata-Barsora border road. The troops, after frisking the men, found 193 tablets of R-7 or Yaba, a psychotropic drug. The trio have been identified as Mahindra Sangma (37), Patus Sangma (30) and Loveling Sangma (29). They are residents of Mawphyllun village in South West Khasi Hills. The arrested men said they were carrying the consignment from Tura and would have delivered it to an unknown BD coal importer. In another incident, BSF troops at Jankhol in South Garo Hills found a bag containing 125 bottles of Phensedyle which were being smuggled to Bangladesh, the BSF statement said. “The smugglers were trying to throw the consignment over the fence but BSF foiled their attempt,” it said, adding, “With the consumption of alcohol prohibited in Bangladesh, Phensedyl addiction has been on the rise.”

BSF felicitates students
SHILLONG: The Border Security Force held a felicitation programme for highest scorers of BSF Senior Secondary School in board examinations at the frontier headquarters in Shillong on Friday. Those who were felicitated were Aradhika Paul, Shreyosi Adyapak and Shreya Swaroop for Class X board results and Dipu Swargiary (91.8 per cent in Science), Eshan Srivastawa (86 per cent in Commerce) and lawnda Gracentia (84.4 per cent in Arts).

Nokma body meets CS over delay in road repair
TURA: The members of the Nokmas’ Joint Action Development Committee led by its president, Ajit Momin, recently met Meghalaya Chief Secretary and submitted a memorandum apprising him of the extreme delay in repair works on the Baghmara-Maheskola-Ranikor Road. During the meeting the Chief Secretary is said to have assured the delegation that the matter would be looked into at the earliest.The delegation also met Deputy General Manager of NHIDCL, S K Dev, including Joint Secretary, Land and Revenue, B Hajong on the issue of delay in land acquisition wherein, both the officials also assured that work relating to their respective departments would be looked into immediately.

Police-public meet to chalk out peace strategy held
Resubelpara: Civil society leaders, traditional heads, church members and other local bodies here have congratulated North Garo Hills police for ensuring peace in the district. The local bodies convened a meeting at the SP’s office to chalk out a strategy on peace and development. The participants lauded SP Dalton Marak and his team for their successes in arresting ULFA-GNLA arms supplier Nangsen Ch Sangma, the kidnappers of a six-year-old boy in Dangkhong and fake Facebook users who were maligning church leaders. Marak complimented the public for their co-operation. “We will continue our peace efforts and pray to God for peace in our land,” said a pastor.“Police and public are indispensable parts of the society. I appeal to all civil society leaders to take part in this peace parleys,” said SP Marak.

SWGH climbs to 2nd position in health indicators in the state
Ampati: South West Garo Hills district has climbed from 4th position to 2nd position among the 11 districts in the State in terms of all health indicators in the year 2016-2017. This was revealed during the quarterly review meeting of the District Coordination Committee (DCC), which was chaired by Deputy Commissioner Cyril V.D.Diengdoh at Ampati on Friday. During the review of the status of implementation of various state and central schemes by the line departments, the District Medical & Health Officer informed that the district has gone up in all of the 16 health indicators. She also said that action plan has been drawn up right from the village level to bring down the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) in the district.

Five- day farmer’s training on horticulture crops conclude
Tura: A five-day farmer’s training programme was conducted at West Garo Hills from June 19 to 23. It was organised by the Snamrik Club, Tura in collaboration with the Central Institute of Horticulture (CIH), Mediphema.. Around 250 farmers from various villages participated in the training programme. Shisarenla Aier from CIH, highlighted on the activities of the Institute and also welcomed the farmers to apply for various training courses offered by the institute. Different resource persons gave their inputs like cultivation on Naga Mircha (King Chilli) which was delivered by Senti Longchar (DK), Horticulture Officer from Nagaland, package and practices on tomato, capsicum and softwood grafting techniques in mango by Apurba Hajong, ADO, Daddenggre (Hq).

Villages transferred from Resubelpara block to NGH
Shillong: The Government of Meghalaya, in a notification issued, has transferred 8 (eight) villages under the erstwhile Resubelpara C&RD Block to North Garo Hills District. The transferred villages are Daporbita, Sarapara, Thakurbilla Garo, Darugre, Thakurbilla Rabha, Fakirmara, Amtuli and Borjhora under Bolsong B. Mohol G.S. Circle. This was informed by the Chief Secretary.
