PCI’s Sub-Committee to examinethe issue of Accreditation
SHILLONG: The Press Council’s Sub-Committee on accreditation comprising of Rajiv Ranjan Nag, Convenor and Prabhat Kumar Dash, member will be visiting Shillong to meet with the working journalists/Authorities of State Government to review the Accreditation Policy of the State Government. The Sub-Committee will hear the grievances of the Working Journalists of Meghalaya on June 27 from 11 am onwards at Shillong Club, and will interact with State Government Authorities on June 28 from 11 am to 2 pm. The working journalists can interact and depose before the members of the said Committee on June 27.
Blood donation camp organised across 12 locations in NE
SHILLONG: Bharti Airtel Limited organised a two-day blood donation on June 23 and 24, drive among its employees and partners dedicating the day to the service of the people in the North eastern states.The Airtel employees and partners across offices in the region together donated blood to Government medical college hospital blood banks, Government hospital blood banks and Red Cross Society blood banks. The blood banks in Meghalaya and North Eastern states especially are in constant need of fresh supply of blood. Airtel initiated this campaign to contribute towards lessening the shortage and helping those in need of blood transfusions. The blood donation camps were successfully organised simultaneously across 12 locations including Shillong, Guwahati, Tezpur, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Bongaigaon, Nalbari, Silchar, Agartala, Aizwal, Imphal and Dimapur with the technical support of the blood banks.
SOS India celebrates its Founder’s Day
Shillong: SOS Children’s Village Shillong a project of SOS Children’s Villages of India celebrated its Founder Father Dr. Hermann Gmeiner’s birthday on June 23. This special day of SOS Children’s Villages is celebrated in 132 countries. SOS Children’s Villages, an international NGO, has been engaged for the last 68 years in providing secure and a loving home to children without parental care and children at the risk of abandonment across the world. In SOS Children’s village in Shillong the celebration witnessed cultural performances by the children.A documentary was also shown to the guests which was produced by Dr Natalie of NERIE. Speaking on the occasion as the Chief Guest Kala Ramachandran, IPS, Director of NEPA lauded the work done by SOS.
Jasper Elias’ second collection of poetry released
SHILLONG: Jasper Elias’s second collection of poetry The Infinite Dream was released on Saturday by UPSC Chairman and Historian, Dr. David Syiemlieh, in Little Chef Café, Laitumkhrah. In the programme, Elias in a panel discussion with Syiemlieh and Dr. Ananya S. Guha, poet and IGNOU Director Shillong, described the ‘dream’ as the recurrent theme in the book. “I suffer in despair seeing many issues in society like war, conflict, pain and loss-both personal and political. We as a human race are searching for peace and contentment. This is a constant longing in all of us.” he added. When asked about the style and form of the poems he said that the poems are not abstract, they are like folk songs.After the book release, poems from The Infinite Dream were read by Elias and Syiemlieh. Copies of the book were sold in the said venue with Elias signing them.
Financial literacy camp cum digital campaign held
Shillong: State Bank of India as SLBC Convenor organised a Financial Literacy Camp cum Digital Campaign on Friday at Indoor Stadium,Mawngap. More than 600 people from various places of East Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi District attended the camp. The gathering also included a number of school students. On this occasion, a Mobile ATM Van was flagged off and dedicated to the people of Meghalaya. The ATM is the first of its kind in the entire North East. It will further the financial inclusion goals of the Bank.The camp was graced by P. V. S. L. N. Murty, Chief General Manager, North East Circle, SBI, Rajeev Arora, Deputy General Manager (B&O) Shillong, SBI, Bimal Deb Roy, AGM Shillong Urban Region (SLBC Convenor), SBI, Mark Challam, BDO Mawphlang, L Blah, MDC Mawphlang, officials of NABARD, RBI and various other officials of State Bank of India and a few other banks.
Pay and use toilets, drinking water project inaugurated
SHILLONG: The pay and use toilets and drinking water project of Rotary Club, Shillong was formally inaugurated by the Minister of Urban affairs, Ronnie V Lyngdoh in the presence of MUDA officials including its Director, Kharbuli. The project is situated adjoining the Mahavir Park at Jhalupara on the National Highway. Speaking on behalf of the Rotary Club, DGN Rtn Dr Debasish Das apprised the Minister regarding the various need based projects undertaken by the Club for the community of Meghalaya. Lyngdoh appreciated the good work by the Rotary Club and extended his gratitude to the members for this project as such necessities are not seen in the city. He assured the members of all help from the government for doing community need based projects in the future. The Pay and Use Toilets and Clean Drinking Water project was then handed over to the Director MUDA for its functioning.
Cleaning drive held in the streets of Nongstoin
NONGSTOIN: With the initiative of Swacch Bharat Mission, West Khasi Hills district administration on Friday along with students and teachers of nearly 25 schools and colleges organised a cleaning drive to clean the streets in Nongstoin town.The plan was mooted by the District Administration during the celebration of World Environment Day. The idea was to bring children on to the streets to have weekly cleaning drives of public parks, their own localities, roads stretches, market areas, public places etc as part of the Socially Useful Productive Work (SUPW) curriculum. Not just in Nongstoin town, the BDOs have been asked to draw up an action plan to take this initiative to each and every village.Bamboo-brooms, bamboo baskets (khoh), spade and such other tools have been given to the schools by the District Administration under Chief Minister’s Youth for Green Campaign scheme. Instructions have been given to children to handle only dry wastes, not to touch wet wastes/hazardous wastes, be mindful of the traffic movement, not to cause disturbance to the general public etc. Vehicles have been arranged to collect the garbage and shift it to SLRM center for scientific disposal. Hundreds of public dustbins have already been installed in the town area.
Dak Bangla actress felicitated
SHILLONG: Red FM 93.5, Shillong, felicitated Sylviana L. Mawlong, who recently won the ‘Best Actor Northeast Female’ in the Prag Cine Awards Northeast held at Kokrajhar, Assam on June 17–18. She won the best actress award for her role in Dak Bangla on June 24. Dak Bangla’ is a Khasi horror movie, directed by a renowned Khasi film director Kitbok Kharmalki and produced by Justice Marwein. The station is very proud to have honored the Shillong -based actor who brought laurels to the state by winning the prestigious award. The young actress was fecilitated by Red Fm station workers that includes Desmond Sunn along with the two famous Rjs in Shillong Rj Zack and Rj Kit in the presence of her father Bobby Basaiawmoit.
