NONGPOH: The Joint Action Committee of Dorbar Shnong in the Umsning area on Friday reiterated their resentment against the National Highway Authority of India for not repairing the 5-km dilapidated highway connecting Umsning and Umtrew.
Taking note of the deplorable condition of the road, the committee, led by chairman Eddie G. Kharbani, and other members met Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner C.P Gotmare on Friday.
The delegation also submitted a petition to the DC urging him to take up the matter with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) for immediate repair of the road as it is badly damaged and full of potholes, putting the lives of local people at risk.
Gotmare told the delegation that he had taken up the matter with the project director of NHAI several times but the fund sanctioned is yet to be released. He also said the project director has assured that for the time being, temporary work will be carried out by the monitoring body.
Meanwhile, Rocky Marwein, the JAC spokesperson, said, “People from the affected villages have voiced concern over the poor condition of the road. If NHAI fails to take action, the public will close the road in protest.” He also said in case of accidents owing to the poor condition of the road the monitoring body will be held responsible.
