SHILLONG: The Medical Council of India has decided against recognising the MD/MS (Anesthesiology) qualification for two seats at North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in the institute granted by North-Eastern Hill University.
A letter from the MCI to the dean of the institute said the post graduate medical examination committee of the council, at its meeting held last month, considered the council’s assessor report of April 2017 on the standard of examination and other teaching facilities for renewal of recognition of MD/MS (Anesthesiology) qualification for two seats in the institute.
The committee considered the report and decided to recommend not to recognise the courses granted by NEHU in respect of students being trained at the institute since there is not enough faculty members.
The other reason is that promotion of Associate Professor Nari Maru Lyngdoh is not as per regulation. “She was assistant professor for four years and six months against the requirement of five years. She has no publication,” the letter added. According to the letter, in 2012, 2014 and 2015, the college has admitted four students per year whereas they have letter of permission for only two, adding that total number of minor operations in the last three years were 170 in 2014, 220 in 2015 and 277 in 2016, which means less than 1 per day and grossly inadequate.
“The total number of major operations for the whole hospital on assessment day was only 10, average of randomly selected days is only 9 which is inadequate”, the MCI said.
The letter also added that admissions (if any) against these two seats till renewal of recognition of the courses will be irregular and not in accordance with MCI regulations and hence will not be recognised.
The Director of NEIGRIHMS was not available for response.
