Cleaning drive to promote Nohwet village

SHILLONG: The Executive Committee and the Dorbar Shnong of Nohwet Village, East Khasi Hills, in collaboration with the Martin Luther Christian University organised a cleaning drive in the village on July 1. 
The cleaning drive is a part of the Bi-annual Cleaning Drive of the village, which has been practicing since time immemorial. 
The whole village takes part in the cleaning drive and it culminates in the Living Root Bridge, which is located in the village. 
The headman of the village, Phanistar Kharduia while speaking about the event said, “We have been organising this cleaning drive for many years now and we try to follow our traditional customs, one of them being the maintenance and the preservation of the Living Root Bridge in the village.”
Kharduia also informed that efforts to promote the village as a tourist destination has been underway and he hoped that the tourists, who want to visit the Bridge via Mawlynnong would visit their village. 
The head man also informed that the fact that Martin Luther Christian University is known for its Community Outreach Programmes, and its close relationship with the different communities in the region and therefore the University was the logical choice to partner with for this initiative.
The University was represented by the faculty of Department of Environment and Traditional Ecosystems; Department of Tourism and Travel Management; and the students and faculty members of the Students Affairs Comm-ittee, Martin Luther Christian University.
