FIFA happy over preparations for U-17 World Cup in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: The FIFA officials for FIFA U-17 World Cup –Tournament Director Xavier Xeppi and Venue Director Ms Romma Khanna – on Monday expressed their satisfactions over the arrangements made so far holding of the games at Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium at Sarusajai National Games Complex here.

They expressed their views in the first steering committee meeting held at Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s office here on Monday.  The meeting also decided to do the needful for the security and public viewing of the FIFA U-17 World Cup Trophy which would be held here from August 31 to September 5.

The steering committee meeting of FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017 took stock of the last-minute preparations for the nine matches that would be held in Indira Gandhi Athletic International Stadium here and deliberated on the role and responsibilities of the line departments in holding the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017.

The meeting reviewed the fringe facilities like street lighting from Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport to Sarusajai, garbage disposal, beautification works, security arrangement and other amenities for the football lovers.

It may be noted that the tournament will start on October, as Guwahati will play the host for as many as nine matches including quarter and semi finals.

In another meeting Chief Minister Sonowal also reviewed the preparations of the AIBA Women’s Youth World Boxing Championship to be held in Guwahati from 19 to 26 November, 2017 under the joint aegis of Government of Assam and Boxing Federation of India.

The competition will feature 200 nations involving more than 300 pugilists and 150 officials. Sonowal took stock of the security, accommodation, finance and accounts of the competition and assured all government support and assistance in making the tournament a success.

State Finance Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, Minister of State (I/C) for Youth Affairs and Sports Naba Kumar Doley, Chief Secretary VK Pipersenia, Director General of Police Mukesh Sahay, and a host of other senior officers of civil and police administration including officials of Sports Authority of India were present at both the meetings.
