Guwahati: About 4 lakh people have been affected by the current wave of flood so far in Assam where the situation has remained grim with the mighty Brahmaputra River flowing above the danger level at least in four places at Guwahati, Neamatighat, Tezpur and Dhubri . One person was drowned in flood water at Numaligarh in Golaghat district on Wednesday.
The fast devastation is spread over spread over 15 districts in the state where Lakhimpur, Golaghat , Sonitpur and Karimganj have been worst affected. Maxium number of over 1.80 lakh people have been affected in Karimganj district followed by over 79,000 people in Lakhimpur district. The authorities have so far set up 160 relief camps to shelter about 48,000 flood-hit till date.
Total 853 villages under 47 revenue circles have been inundated in this wave of flood till date while 16000 hectares of crop are were affected, according to the Assam state Disaster Management Authority.
The flood has inundated most part of Kaziranga National Park where about 70 forest camps inside the park have come under water in four main ranges of Burapahar, Bagori, Kohora and Agoratoli. The flood has driven animals on the raised platforms inside park as well as the foothills areas across the national highway that strike along the southern fringe of the park. Two flood-hit deer were run over by vehicles on the highway besides the park on Tuesday night. The authorities have clamped restriction on speed limit of the vehicles passing through the highway for the safety of flood-hit animals fleeing the park.
However, forest officials in Kaziranga Park informed that the situation was under control as far as protection of flood-hit animals from poachers on the prowl. The park authority has pressed motor boats, country boats in operation to mount vigil in the marooned park while patrolling has been intensified along the highway for protection of fleeing animals.
Meanwhile, ferry services across the Brahmaputra River in Guwahati has been suspended by the authority in view of the river water flowing above the danger level . Thousands of people commute every day across the Brahmaputra River between Guwahati city on the South bank and North Guwahati areas on the North bank of the river.
