Agartala: Upset for being ignored from road communication, villagers on Tuesday locked Panchayat chief and secretary in a room for four hours at Brahmachhera Panchayat under Teliamura block of Khowai district.
Later, block development officer rescued them assuring to fulfil the demand soon.
According to report, the villagers have been demanding upgradation of an existing brick soling road in the village. The villagers faced problem in the movement due to deplorable road condition. Maintenance works were done only once in last 25 years and it has now turned into a death trap.
Despite repeated request to include the road under Pradhan Mantri Grameen Sadak Yojna, Brahmachhera panchayat ignored the villagers’ demand. After a series of deputations, Teliamura block administration issued work order in January this year for maintenance, a villager stated.
“As per the work order, at least 7,695 bricks would be used for the road and Rs 97,896 was allocated for this work. However, the maintenance began with poor quality bricks and finished the work using less number of bricks and the villagers protested it. Meantime, in monsoon rain washed away everything that enraged the villagers,” said Nikhil Debnath, a teacher of the locality.
The angry villagers finally locked both panchayat head and secretary in a room in the panchayat office. Later, deputy collector and magistrate Avayananda Baidya along with police rescued them assuring the villagers to build the road and investigate the matter. (UNI)
