GUWAHATI: Prominent citizens of Assam have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking action against officials of Delhi Golf Club who humiliated Tailin Lyngdoh for wearing Jainsem.
Among the 100-odd citizens who signed the petition included former president of the Editors’ Guild of India DN Bezboruah, Gauhati University vice-chancellor Mridul Hazarika, eminent author Mitra Phukan, IIT-Guwahati faculty Anup Kumar Gogoi, industrialist Chiranjit Chaliha, journalist Wasbir Hussain and human rights activist Miguel Das Queah, among others.
The signatories described the June 25 incident as one that violated provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. They sought action to end the culture of class and race-based discrimination not only at Delhi Golf Club but in all such institutions across the country, private or public.
