SHILLONG: The State Government will denotify check gates from Friday in view of the new tax regime.
This was informed by Deputy Commissioner of Taxes L. Khongsit in a communiqué to the superintendent of taxes and inspector of taxes, who are in charge of various check gates.
The in-charge inspectors of taxes of the check gates have also been asked to report to respective superintendents of taxes for necessary action.
There are 11 check gates, including three major ones at Byrnihat in Ri Bhoi, Umkiang in East Jaintia Hills and Dainadubi in North Garo Hills.
Altogether 22 states in the country have abolished the border commercial tax check posts.
The abolition of check posts will allow seamless movement of goods across the border, ending hours of waiting that commercial vehicles had to endure.
However, it is not known as to what new mechanism will be put in place by the State Government to monitor certain items like petrol and IMFL which do not come under the purview of the Goods & Services Tax.
Many check gates in the State were marred with controversies following frequent allegations of extortion. The matter was even raised on the floor of the House on several occasions and there was a demand to close down such gates.
