KSU member arrested from city
SHILLONG: Police have arrested another Khasi Students Union (KSU) member for his involvement in an arson case in the city on Thursday. Banjop Maring (28), president, KSU, Eastern Border Ri Bhoi from Jaiaw Lumbatemon, was apprehended in connection with a case of mischief under Shillong Sadar Police Station. Police said that he was involved in torching a truck near the FCI godown besides he is also wanted in Ri Bhoi district for a similar case.The accused, however, is undergoing a treatment as he complained of being sick.
Police issue guidelines on foreigners’ visit
SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills SP has asked hotels, guest houses and inns to submit the list of inmates in proper format to the office of the Superintendent of Police cum Foreigners registration officer. This was after the Home Ministry (Foreigners Division) issued a notification regarding the stay of foreigners . According to police, those who have registered should submit the report online regularly within 24 hours of arrival of foreigners in their respective premises. Moreover, all owners/ tenants of private houses/ boarding houses, hostels, schools, colleges, universities, Churches, Mosque, Temples and hospital authorities should also report to the office of the Foreigners registration Officer in case any foreigner stays/studies in their respective premises/ institutions. The same also applies to all corporation houses, NGOs, educational institutions, religious institutions, government and private institutions/ organisations who invite any foreigner to participate in meetings, conferences, seminars and workshops. The hosts should ensure that they should come on an appropriate Visa i.e., Conference Visa and not on tourist visas except for those who come with ‘official passport’.Moreover, no foreigner holding ‘tourist visa’ will be allowed to be involved in coverage of events, journalistic and religious activities.
Surrendered militant arrested after absconding
RESUBELPARA: GNLA cadre Lakno D. Sangma alias Jimmy, who escaped after surrendering to North Garo Hills police on February 3, was arrested on Thursday. Jimmy was in the first batch of cadres. Jimmy joined GNLA in 2011. He was first arrested in 2012. After surrendering this year, Jimmy started arm smugglings again. He was summoned to the SP office after a man from Lower Daram was arrested in June. But Jimmy managed to escape.“The police acted on intelligence inputs and arrested Jimmy,” said ASP Ritu Raj Ravi.
Cops prevent 4 NGH teens from joining GNLA
RESUBELPARA: The alacrity of the State police has prevented four youths from North Garo Hills district from joining GNLA. The cyber cell of the police department kept tabs on mobile conversations and Facebook comments shared between GNLA leaders and the youth, whose names have been withheld. The four teenagers, aged between 18-19 years, were summoned to appear before NGH police on Thursday. Quick response from the Nokma Sordar and parents of the four teenagers brought them to Bajengdoba PS by evening. They are secondary and higher secondary level students. All church leaders and civil society leaders joined the special counselling. The teenagers promised to take the right path. “This may be our turning point. We thank Meghalaya Police and the church leaders. We will concentrate on our studies and obey our parents, officer and elders,” said one of the teens.
AICC minority observer to visit city
Shillong: All India Congress Committee (Minority Department) Observer for Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram, Rejaul Karim Laskar is coming to the city for his one-day visit on Saturday. Laskar will call a meeting with Chief Minister Mukul Sangma at the Chief Minister’s residence and discuss matters related to the campaign for the 2018 assembly elections in Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram. He will also visit the Meghalaya Pradeash Congress Office in the city. Laskar will also call on Archbishop Most Rev. Dominic Jala at the Archbishop’s House and pay a visit to the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians, Shillong.
GSU Ronjeng Circle submits memorandum to CM
Ronjeng: The members of Garo Students’ Union, Rongjeng Circle have submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Mukul M. Sangma and demanded the setting up of one govt college for Ronjeng, establishment of civil sub-division, speed up the functioning of recently declared administrative unit office, sanction medical equipment to CHC Rongjeng like X-ray machine,microscope etc, construction of Hostel for both boys and girls and to speed up the construction of a Residential school.
Funds for VAs, NGOs, SHGs
Shillong: Proposals are invited from Voluntary Agencies/Non Governmental Organizations/Self Help Groups hailing from East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat for consideration of Financial Assistance from the Voluntary Action Fund (VAF) of Planning Department, Government of Meghalaya in accordance with the approved guidelines.Assistance under this scheme shall include only the following activities, namely; Short Term Training/Programme and Short Term Workshops/Seminars of Socio Economic Importance.The Financial Assistance to be sanctioned to the VAs/NGOs/SHGs will depend on the merit and nature of the scheme.

Postal union strike
SHILLONG: The NE circle, postal group-C unions have resorted to strike to settle the long and genuine problems of the circle without further procrastination. Observance of lunch hour demonstration programme ,wearing of black badges and postering began from July 5 and will continue till July 10 followed by observance of day long dharna in front of divisional office, on July 12, day long dharna in front of Chief Postmaster General office on July 14. Other programmes include observance of two- hour pen down on July 17.Date for indefinite strike will be decided at the Joint Circle Conference to be held at Guwahati ) from July 20 to 22.
Drugs seized in city
SHILLONG: Police on Friday evening arrested three people including two women from the city and seized contraband items from their possession. Police said that Kishan Kalita (21) along with Ayesha Khatun (40) and Pinky Begum (22) were arrested from Barapathar under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. Police recovered 0.06 grams of contraband items and cash of Rs 14,084 from their possession. All the arrested persons will be produced before the Court on Saturday.
