Anthony Pariat no more
SHILLONG: Anthony Pariat (56), Deputy General Manager MTC, son of (L) Moresto Swer and Iona Pariat (kong Nana) passed away after a prolonged illness at NEIGRIHMS on Sunday. He is survived by his wife, H. Rose Suchiang and three children, Lionel, Edgar and Diyanka. His funeral will be held on July 11 at 1:00 pm from their residence at Pohkseh. He was associated with South Asian Games.
Miscreants attempt to burn govt vehicle
JOWAI: Unidentified miscreants attempted to burn a government vehicle parked inside the premises of the West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner office on Saturday night. The vehicle (Bolero) was allotted to the Basin Development. The timely alert by the home-guard of the DC Office, the miscreants fled without being able to torch the vehicle, police said. Police had recovered a bottle filled with petrol and are investigating the matter.
Headmaster says school panel’s claims false
TURA: The headmaster of Matri Mangal Girls’ SSA UP School at Moulakandi here has rubbished allegations of the managing committee that he was delaying payment of teachers’ salary. In a written clarification, the headmaster, who is also secretary of the school managing committee, said he had no role in the payment delay. In fact, it was the president of the committee who had refused to sign the cheque to be handed over to a Social Studies teacher, the headmaster alleged. He further alleged that the president was trying to divert the money.
Youth body raises Baghmara woes
TURA: The All A’chik Youth Federation (AAYF) from Baghmara has urged concerned authorities to look into the various problems plaguing the town. The federation pointed out that stopping repair work on roads midway was causing inconvenience to locals. It also said the SBI Baghmara branch has less number of counters and the internet connectivity is also erratic. AAYF has urged the regional manager in Shillong to look into the matter. The federation has asked the deputy commissioner to check why there is a shortage of petrol and diesel at the fuel station, the only one in the town.
Recitation competition
SHILLONG: Rabindranath Tagore Club organised a recitation competition in English and Bengali under 10th Inter Shillong Cultural Event on Sunday at Bangiya Sahitya Parishad. A total of 57 participants took part in recitation in English and 26 participants in Bengali. The judges were Jona Goswami, Jayashree Deb Roy Bhattacharjee, Sohini Das, Anindyo Sen Gupta and Ananya Roy. On July 16, the club will organize dancing competition, and quiz final round, which will be held in Bangiya Sahitya Parishad. The event, which started on June 25 and will conclude on July 16.
Award to meritorious students
JOWAI: The North Liberty Higher Secondary School, Jowai, presented an Excellency Awards to its students, who excelled good position in the MBOSE SSLC Examination. Three students of the school had topped in the top 20 list. Daekynsai Mitre Phyrngap was in the Top 3, Arsamanki Thma in the top 5 and Embhahlang Thubru was in the Top 15 list. They were awarded with a laptop and a certificate of appreciation. Among the three, there were more than 120 students, who received the award including those who are good in sports. Deputy Chief Minister, RC Laloo attended the programme as the chief guest in the presence of the West Jaintia Hills District School and Education Officer, M Pde besides the principal, teachers, students and others.
Tree plantation organised in WJH
JOWAI: The Unitarian Church in Jowai has organised a tree plantation drive on Saturday at Unitarian Church Mukhap in West Jaintia Hills. Earlier, in a short gathering held at Rev. David Edward Palasam School in which T Papang a prominent resident was the chief guest. Elders and members of the church from other villages were also present. According to Papang, the plantation was the first of its kind in the village and he lauded the Unitarian church for organising such programme.
