SHILLONG: Meghalaya College Teachers’ Association (MCTA) has slammed the State government over non-existence of the state education policy even 45 years after becoming a full-fledged state.
Addressing a Press conference here on Tuesday, General Secretary of the Association, Amanda Basaiawmoit said Meghalaya government has failed to formulate a state education policy since 1972, that is after creation of the state. He said, it was a clear reflection of the apathetic attitude of the government towards the education sector.
The Association also rued that regional imbalance in higher education sector existed in the state given the concentration of institutions of higher education in Shillong, which has led to migration of students from rural to urban areas as well as high drop-out rate.
Basaiawmoit also expressed concern over the privatization of education system in the state and said that a number of private universities and colleges had come up in the state which were being run more as business houses than education institutions.
According to Basaiawmoit, lack of supporting infrastructure and school education facilities in the state also does not make it conducive for the national institutions of importance to be set up in the state.
Meanwhile, the Association also informed that the state-level conventions to observe justice day for sensitizing the teachers about the issue would be held on July 12 throughout the country.
The Association has 639 members from 15 colleges in the state.
