TURA: The Association for Democracy and Empowerment (ADE) has raise alarm over mushrooming illegal teer counters in Tura region and urged the state government to deal sternly with the issue.

The ADE in a statement issued here on Wednesday said that the State Government’s move of legalizing teer in the state for the mere purpose of earning revenue had backfired and that it was losing revenue rapidly due to the presence of a huge number of teer counters operating without valid licenses.

“Due to these unauthorized teer counters, those with valid licenses are incurring losses. The authorized counters acquire licenses, pay taxes and abide by the rules of the authority. But the real fruit is reaped by teer mafias. They contribute nothing to the state exchequer and are also known for defaulting due payments,” the ADE said.

The association also pointed out that most teer counters whether legal or illegal operate near busy streets, schools, Churches and market places and  demanded that those must be shifted to locations where they were least accessible to the common people.
