UDP to support NDA’s Kovind

SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has decided to support Ram Nath Kovind, the NDA presidential nominee, on July 17.
UDP working president Bindo M Lanong said, “We have made up our mind since Ram Nath Kovind is going to be the President of the country.”
Lanong said UDP agreed on Kovind’s candidature because “BJP is at the Centre”.
Earlier, NPP had said it would support Kovind. HSPDP, UDP’s regional alliance partner, will not take part in the presidential election. It is not known whom the independent candidates will support.
Alliance meet
The meeting of UDP and HSPDP for seat sharing will be held next week.
Lanong said the party is also in touch with KHNAM and GNC in Garo Hills for a similar alliance.
UDP and HSPDP have forged a pre-poll alliance to contest 36 seats in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region in the 2018 elections. Talks on a few seats are still on.
The parties will make the seat-sharing public in August.
