SHILLONG: The Assembly has removed the name of rape accused legislator Julius Dorphang from two committees under pressure from various quarters.
As per the July 7 notification of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretariat, the name of Dorphang had figured as member of the Committee on Privileges and the Committee on Subordinate Legislation.
After media reports in this regard, women pressure groups had petitioned the child rights commission as well as the Speaker.
Later, the State Women’s Commission had also protested over the matter.
With the concerns from many quarters, the Assembly Secretariat on Thursday de-notified the name of Dorphang from the two Assembly panels.
Independent legislator David Nongrum has replaced Dorphang in the Committee on Privileges while Congress legislator Kennethson R Sangma was appointed member of the Committee on Subordinate Legislation.
Assembly Speaker AT Mondal said on Friday the July 7 notification where Dorphang’s name had figured was an extension of the earlier appointment for the remaining seven months and it was not any fresh appointment.
“However, now we have removed his name from both the committees,” Mondal said.
He said earlier, the Assembly had also de-notified the name of Dorphang from the post of chairman of the Committee on SC and ST.
