Tura: The Garo Hills region has “immense potential” to become a tourist hotspot, said Rohi Suri, consultant to Meghalaya Basin Development Authority at a recent function in the State.
Speaking at a five-day workshop on photography, eco-tourism and communication skills development in West Garo Hills from July 10-14, Suri said there is a need for better tourist circuits and engagement of guides for value addition. He also emphasised on improved transport system.
The expert said the region can focus on anthropology tourism, health tourism and architectural tourism as the broader part of the tourism industry.
The programme was jointly organised by the West Garo Hills district administration and the Basin Development Unit, Tura, under the aegis of state flagship programme Integrated Basin Development and Livelihood Promotion Programme (IBDLP) and initiative from Chief Minister’s Youth Development Scheme. The innovative programme was attended by individuals and groups, including media houses. The knowledge management team of IBDLP from Garo Hills also took part in the workshop.
There were sessions which encompassed both theory and practical. The five-day programme had field visits and photography on nature and landscape. On the concluding day, there was a session on formulation of work plan with timeline from the participants.
The technical aspect of good photography and documentation was given special focus.
