BJP Mahila Morcha formed in Nongstoin
NONGSTOIN: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) finally got the district Mahila Morcha in West Khasi Hills.The District Mahila Morcha was formed on Thursday to strengthen BJP in the district particularly in Nongstoin Constituency. The meeting also welcomed Dr. H. Bani and his group to the party. Beauthantis Marbaniang was elected as President, Dilbita Rani and Bateilancy Pariong as Vice President, Queentina Diengdoh General Secretary, Fulltinoris as Treasurer and two secretaries. The meeting was also attended by State President Meghalaya Mahila Morcha Pelcy Snaitang, Haka Lyngdoh General Secretary and Incharge WKHD,  R. Mawsor President BJP Nongstoin Mandal, F. Marwein District President, D.D. Sohphoh National Council Member among others.

Panel demands laws to check crime against women and children
SHILLONG: The Khun Kynthei U Hynniewtrep Association (KKUHA) stressed on the need to come up with stringent laws to check crimes against women and children demanding to punish rapists with life imprisonment. Addressing reporters on Friday, KKUHA president, R. Jyrwa said, “We have submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister Mukul Sangma demanding that strong laws should be framed and rapists should be punished with life imprisonment.” The association has served a two months deadline to the Chief Minister with a demand that the state government should frame laws on this matter. Baiahunlang Snaitang, general secretary of KKUHA said that the association plans to agitate if their demands are not met. Jyrwa claimed that not more than 20 rape victims complained to the organisation that they are deprived of the govt schemes for rape victims.

GSU to hold office picketing in Williamnagar
SHILLONG: The Garo Students Union , East zone, WIlliamnagar will hold two days picketing on July 24-25 at the DTO office in Williamnagar. They are protesting against the delay in appointment of the full-fledged District Transport office and the immediate installment of embossing machine at the DTO office.

Relief campaign for flood affected people in Assam
Shillong: Socio-Cultural Students’ Association is launching a relief campaign for the flood affected people of Assam. Contributions can be made in cash and in kind ( Food, clothes, water bottles, etc.). BSF seizes cattle worth Rs 35 lakh
Shillong: The BSF troops deployed at Nayabazar in East Khasi Hills District recovered 27 cattle worth more than Rs. 4.9 lac. These cattle were being smuggled from India to Bangladesh. The smugglers tried to smuggle cattle from the unfenced area but the alert BSF jawans always foil their attempt. In another incident the BSF troops deployed at Ganganagar, West Khasi Hills seized 20 cattle worth more than Rs. 3.2 lac while being smuggled from India to Bangladesh. The BSF troops have countered the smugglers very effectively and have taken serious measures to curb cattle smuggling along the border. For the last four days, the BSF have seized 198 cattle worth more than 35 lakh.All the seized items were later handed to the concerned department for further legal action.

 Road show on World Food India held
SHILLONG: A Road Show on World Food India 2017 and Promotion of New Scheme Kisan SAMPADA was held on Friday at Hotel Poinisuk, Laitumkhrah. Ministry of Food Processing Industries will organise World Food India from November 3- 5 at New Delhi. It is a mega international event for investment opportunities and trade promotion in India’s food processing industry. It is learnt that 35 countries have shown their interest in the programme. Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, P W Ingty informed that Meghalaya will participate in the event. He added that proposals will be sent for the SAMPADA (Scheme for Agro-Marine Processing and Development of Agro-Processing Clusters) and urged stakeholders to make use of SAMPADA.

Heroin seized in city
SHILLONG: On July 20, Gaurav Gurung lodged a complaint that VDP members of Upper Mawprem and Nongsohphoh apprehended two persons Rajiv Kanwar and Kishan Dorjee from Naspatighari on Thursday. They recovered from their possession fourteen small wrapped papers containing suspected heroin.

Painting competition on ‘Waste Management’ today
Shillong: Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board in collaboration with North Eastern Service All India Radio, Shillong is organising a poster competition on the theme- “Waste Management” on Saturday at the office of NES, All India Radio at 12 noon.The competition is for students of Class VII to XII as part of an initiative to sensitise people to translate their concern for a cleaner Shillong into action. DDG (E) AIR Shillong S Mandal, Member Secretary MSPCB JH Nengnong and Environment Engineer MSPCB WR Kharkrang will address on waste management.

School celebrates 10 years of its establishment
NONGSTOIN: KJP Synod Higher Secondary School, Nongstoin celebrated its 10 years of establishment and its contribution to the rural people through education on Friday. CEM KHADC Pynshngain N Syiem was the Chief Guest and graced the ocassion in the presence of MDC L G Nongsiej, Chairman of KHADC and MDC of Mawshynrut Morning Mawsor as guest of honours. The CEM lauded the efforts of the management of the school, the KJP Synod Sepngi. Despite the crisis in terms of financial and other development of the school it is one of the best institution in the district. He also announced to donate 15 lakh to the school management. Rev. R.T.Shangdiar, Chairman of the management said that KJP Synod Sepngi will upgrade the Higher secondary section to college level in 2018.

EAC conducts its annual declamation contest
Shillong: The Annual AFWWA  (Air Force Wives Welfare Association) Declamation Competition was held on Friday at the Headquarters Eastern Air Command, Upper Shillong for the wards of Air Force personnel of the Eastern Region.  The winners of the contest Roshini Singh of Kendriya Vidyalaya Upper Shillong in Hindi Declamation and K Rishitha of Kendriya Vidyalaya Kalaikunda in English Declamation.They will now represent EAC in AFWWA Central Declamation Contest to be held at New Delhi to commemorate the 85th Anniversary of the Indian Air Force. 23 participants from various parts of North East region representing 14 different Air Force Schools and Kendriya Vidyalayas under EAC participated.

Talent hunt show
Shillong: Four Icon Media Entertainment Private Limited is organising a talent hunt show for kids between age group of 4-16 years. This reality show will highlight on acting, singing, dancing and Instrumental Music on Sunday at State Central Library from 10 am onwards. They are looking forward to explore the northeastern states and emphasise on the cultural diversity of the states like Meghalaya, Assam and Tripura. Apart from this, the show will provide a platform for different languages, religions and cultures to come together.
