SHILLONG: The Border Security Force has seized 276 cows and contraband worth more than Rs 49 lakh from different locations in Khasi Hills and Garo Hills in the last five days.
The troops deployed at Nayabazar in East Khasi Hills seized 20 animals being smuggled to Bangladesh, a BSF statement claimed.
The troops at Nongjuri, Tuka, Umsiem and Lynkhat in East Khasi Hills, and Lamasakhi in East Jaintia Hills seized 58 cows. The BSF and its Bangladeshi counterpart have identified many cattle corridors. However, new routes are being discovered by smugglers even after BSF plugged almost all the vulnerable patches of the border by increasing troop deployment.
Civic action programme
BSF, as part of its border management plan, has distributed various articles like stationeries, water storage tanks, water filter, dustbins and torches to schools in remote villages of Dabram and Dambukafal in South Garo Hills. Medical camps were also set up in the villages. About 300 villagers visited the camp.
