NONGPOH: Land owners of New Umtru Hydro Electricity Project during a meeting with the officials of the Meghalaya Electricity Corporation Limited (MeECL) on Monday refused to accept cheques for land compensation in protest against non-acceptance of their three-point charter of demands by the MeECL.

The land owners registered their protest during a meeting with the MeECL officials at the Corporation’s Inspection Bungalow at Byrnihat.

The three-point charter of demands include payment of compensation of land @ Rs 250 per square meter, payment of compensation for crop as per existing rates and regularization of service of the casual employees.

The land owners threatened to intensify their agitation if their demands were not met despite the assurance given by the MeECL officials to take up the matter with their higher authority.
