Jongksha, Smit sordar to contest in 2018 polls
SHILLONG: The Sordar of Jongksha and Smit village, Olet Kharsohnoh will contest the 2018 Assembly elections with the approval of the Dorbar Shnong on Monday. During the Dorbar Shnong meeting, Kharsohnoh said that he wants to bring a change in the Mawkynrew Constituency in various issues pertaining to education, agriculture and tourism development, influx and others.
Assam businessman restrained from opening shop
SHILLONG: Shashi Sekhar Narayan of 702 Dona Towers, Dispur, Assam lodged a complaint that he is running a Puma Franchise Store at Keating Road, Shillong and the shop was taken on lease from Jagdish Prasad Goenka, with an agreement of 12 years and since then he has regularly paid the rent. On June 29, the store manager informed that Prashant Goenka has put an additional lock on the shop and restrained them from opening the store. Several attempts were made to resolve the differences but in vain and he has stock valued around Rs. 70 lakh inside the store and fixtures valued Rs. 30 lakh.
Workshop on disaster risk management for engineers
NONGSTOIN: A one-day workshop on ‘Earthquake Risk Mitigation and Rapid Visual Screening (RVS)’ for engineers was organised by the District Disaster Management Authority, (DDMA), Nongstoin on Tuesday. The objective of the training programme is to acquaint the engineers on the various aspects required for rapid visual screening of critical lifeline buildings. The programme was inaugurated by J. Mawthoh, DDMA officer. In his address, the DDMO, stressed on the need of acquainting with rapid visual screening, which is required for assessing the vulnerability of every critical lifeline building, thereby bringing about disaster preparedness and disaster mitigation. He also emphasised on the need to have a departmental disaster management plan and ensure that all critical lifeline buildings are safe during disaster situations.
General meet for youth of Tura Diocese concludes
SHILONG: Diocesan Youth Commission, Tura organised the general body meeting for the youth of Parish Unit in Mini Pastoral Centre, Tura from July 20 to 23.As many as 99 youth belonging to Tura Diocese Catholic Youth Movement (TDCYM) from 38 parishes turned up for the meeting. The programme was inaugurated by the Chairman of the Commission, Rt. Rev. Andrew R. Marak. Marak presided over the Holy Eucharist and urged them to be the good leaders. The key-note address on ‘Commitment to the Leadership’ was given by Rev. Fr. Francis, the Parish priest of Cathedral. On Sunday, Rev. Fr. CJ Jose, celebrated Holy Mass. He told the youth to grow both in qualitatively and quantitatively. Various programmes were fixed to have in their respective zones. Certificate of participation was given to all at the end of the programme.
Seminar on recycling, waste management
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Research and Development Society (MRDS) conducted a seminar on ‘Recycling and Waste Management in Schools’ at St. Peter’s Secondary School, Nongsder in Ri Bhoi. Mebari V. R. Dorphang explained the importance of the principle of ‘Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle’. Gratia E. Dkhar presided over ‘Why Recycling in Schools?’ that emphasised on the role that students can play towards waste management in their schools and to the community as a whole. The society, in collaboration with the school administration, has pledged to devise an action plan to follow up the seminar so as to make the school more sustainable and eco-friendly. The Society also extended their heartfelt gratitude to the office of the Shillong Municipal Board for providing financial assistance and to Nangjop Thabah for being a part of the seminar and engaging and instilling in the students their individual responsibility towards environment.
