SHILLONG: The young woman who was seen in a video footage ‘defending’ a non-tribal has filed an FIR on Thursday to remove the clipping from social media.
The video that went viral on social media has generated resentment among a section of the people who criticised her actions on Facebook.
Addressing reporters on Thursday, Deigratia Pohthmi from Ratacherra said, “The circulation of the video clip has affected me.”
Narrating the incident occurred at Mawkhar Main road on Monday, Pohthmi said she urged the people present there to hand over the non-tribal to the Dorbar Shnong instead of beating him up.
“No one has the right to beat up anyone even if the person is wrong. I also love my Khasi community but in that particular incident, I was concerned about his life as they shouted that they would beat him with an iron rod,” she added.
Earlier, Meridon Marbaniang of Home Guard Traffic told reporters that she was the first person to intervene in the matter and Pohthmi came later. She also said she filmed the incident but did not know that it would fall into wrong hands.
“I met a friend, Gabriel Mawlong, who stole the video from my phone. I had known him for a long time and in good faith, showed him the video, not knowing that he would send it to his phone via Bluetooth,” she said.
Mawlong, who was also present at the press conference, admitted that he sent the video to another friend who might have misused it.
Marbaniang said the non-tribal man was alleged to have stolen something but there was nothing in his possession except a mobile phone.
Her seniors in the department said the non-tribal was a tourist from south India and is mentally challenged and probably got lost in the city.
The video was uploaded on Facebook and triggered a social media debate.
